Nice Bit of Pop From Hey Anna

HeyAnnaPressPhoto_Bandsquare-1-1Brooklyn based pop artist Hey Anna is a band that most of us probably know very little about though I think you’ll be hearing more about them in the very near future.  The group caught my ear yesterday with this promising and delightful new tune “Island”.  Pop sensibilities are going crazy in this track with mesmerizing harmonies from the sister trio who make up the band’s core.  Let’s not forget the guys in the band either as they provide a backing rhythm to drive it all home.

Hey Anna will be dropping their debut LP Run Koko later this summer.  Stay tuned for more deets as we get them.

Michael Vidal Steps Out from Abe Vigoda

michaelThe years have been relatively good for Michael Vidal, as the singer and guitarist for Abe Vigoda.  But, now he’s moving on to a new project, using his own name.  He’s signed on with Couple Skate Records to reissue Dream Center, which was released on a limited run of cassettes a few years back.  The first single demonstrates what many already know, Vidal has complete control of well-crafted pop songs.  He’s got a calm vocal delivery coming in to meet the airy groove that’s been crafted behind the voice; he’s also showing quite a range in pitch and tone here, which I find rather impressive. You’ll be able to get your hands on the release on June 9th.

More From Acid Dad

11011994_812822625458471_1459261746120271598_oAround a month ago, I introduced you to Acid Dad, a New York band that specializes in making psych punk jams. Today I have a new track to share with you called “Digger,” which is the perfect blend of playful and punk rock– the guitars are raw and gnaw through the song, but then there are moments when the band really doubles up this energy and gives you bursts of sonic explosions. The cymbals crash, the vocals intensify and quicken, and those guitars switch from gnawing to snarling. After this quick release of another excellent track from this group, I’d say watch out for Acid Dad… they’re coming for ya.

Dark New Track From Chelsea Wolfe

Chelsea+WolfeI’ve always had an affinity for Chelsea Wolfe and the dark, brooding sort of pop music that she has created over the last several years.  The new song I’m sharing with you today, “Iron Man”, might just be one of my favorite pieces she’s ever put out.  It’s a song that’s all about the peaks and valleys, the noisy highs of guitar driven rock after you’re calmed with the lows and hushed vocals.  Truly powerful stuff and I suggest you have a listen.

Pick up new album Abyss on August 7th via Sargent House.

In Love with New Flesh World

fleshalmeshI love the forlorn vocals that open the latest single from Flesh World.  When it meets the darkened edges of the guitar sounds, it’s like a calling into the ghostly post-punk realm the band have created with this tune here.  Still, there’s an undercurrent that warms the ears of the listeners, especially around the 1.5 minute mark where the chant of “poolside boys” comes crashing in. If you enjoy some shredding cacophony to drown out the noisy typer next to your cubicle, then look for The Wild Animals in My Life via Iron Lung Records on June 2nd.

New Music from Surfin’ Mutants Pizza Party

deathThis new tune from Surfin Mutants Pizza Party came in the mailbox yesterday, and I really thought it would be a good ditty to share with you midweek.  It’s quick and to the point, but even more remarkable is that the entire project’s been done by one man, Julien Maltais.  To create music alone that’s so well structured (tight even) while working alone is quite a feat, especially considering you don’t have anyone else’s ears to bounce the tune’s off when writing.  It’s the first track off his new album, The Death of Cool, which will be released on May 19th by Fleeting Youth Records.  Fans of punk rock in the vein of Social D will definitely find themselves loving this tune.

ATX Spotlight: Twin Bitches Do It Right

11174497_942951285737062_3480207812902951185_oBeen helping a friend put together a show this week over at Mohawk on Thursday night, and in doing so, I encountered a new band, Twin Bitches that’s really exciting.  Based on their two singles, the band has sort of that post-punk Constantines feeling to them, using jagged guitar chops to push forth the lyrics, which come across somewhere between a throaty growl and a gentle croon.  Musically, you can see similarities to other indie acts, but combined, it sounds like something wholly different. They’ll be playing with two of our favorite local acts, SLOW and Jonly Bonly…so come out, grab a drink, jam out and enjoy some of the finer rock n’ roll tunes in town. Doors are at 9, but you can always come hang out early.

Cool Electronic Groove From Maribou State

10371429_886555468061167_3226064123964997179_nSometimes you just need a little low key simmering dance track to get you going and today that comes from London’s Maribou State. This track, “The Clown,” is a bit different than what I usually post, but the electronic subtleties have won me over. The two gentlemen behind this group have an album coming up called Portraits, which will be released June 6th via Counter Records, and judging from the sound of this track, you don’t want to miss out on that release.

Bonus Elliot Moss Single

emoElliot Moss released his quiet masterpiece, Highspeeds, digitally today (though we won’t be able to get our hands on physical copies until May 5th), and if you grabbed that version, you’ll be treated to this exclusive bonus track.  I think the tune highlights Elliot’s gifts, displaying the fragility in his voice, carefully resting atop the mixture of constructed layers.  There’s so many fine touches throughout the album that this song seems to fit perfectly into the overall concept he’s unleashed.  There’s some streams of the whole record out there, but we wanted to treat you to this special tune he’s offered to his fans.
