So right after we dropped a brand new song from Will Johnson a couple days ago, we receive this new track from Will’s veteran indie act Centro-matic. This song “Only In My Double Mind” is the first single from the band’s upcoming new album Candidate Waltz due out June 21st. While you’re at it, check out the accompanying video for the song featuring painter Will, some flying pizza, and chickens. It’s really hard to believe that a band with talent such as this still manages to somehow fly under the radar in the music scene. On that note, you can also stream a huge selection of Centro-matic’s music on their website if you’re new to the band.
*Update: For the time being, we can only offer you a stream of the song but can direct you to the Centro-matic website for a download.
So they say that Portland is basically like a moderate climate version of Austin, and with some of the music coming out of the city, I have to say I agree. This little PDX Pop Now! compilation, available for purchase on June 2nd, features 41 whopping songs from bands and musicians from the PDX. I’ve had a chance to listen to many of the tunes on this bad bay and am impressed with most of what I hear. Take this little number “Cold Feet” that’s caught my ear by Portland band Lost Lander. It’s nothing fancy, just a nice little pop diddy featuring some unique and interesting takes on rhythm.

The Patrick Wolf in this picture is a far cry from the man that seems to be writing lately, though I love both equally as much. His last few efforts were dominated with synths, and almost felt industrial, but he seems to have found some sort of, well, inner peace. His Lupercalia record is set to hit next week, and based on the video for “House,” he seems to have quieted himself a bit, going for softer tones. Regardless of where his head or heart is at, he always has that angelic voice, and incredible production, so we’re excited any time we get a chance to enjoy more of his work. Take a listen to “House” below for a sample of the upcoming grandiosity.

Long have I adored Stephin Merritt, in pretty much any capacity. So, today Merge Records announced they’d be selling Obscurities, a collection of Merritt rarities, not just those with his work with the Magnetic Fields. Some of these would stem from his work on the science-fiction he did with Lemony Snicket, while others would be culled from those hard to get releases man MF fans swoon over. Merritt even commented on the songs, telling Sterogum that he thought this might have been the best song he’d ever penned that was meant for a wedding. While I’ll admit, it has its beauty, in my mind the winner will always be “It’s Only Time” from the album, i. Regardless, the world’s always a better place with Merritt’s writing.

Here’s another new tripped out psych song from Seattle based rock band Night Beats. This one is called “Dial 666” and will also appear on the band’s upcoming self-titled debut LP out June 28th on Trouble in Mind Records. In the ever growing garage/psych movement, this is an up and coming band to pay attention to.

Occasionally you let things slip, forgetting to check in on your favorite labels or sites, but when go back, you always find a gem waiting for you. Such is the case with this latest single from Slumberland Records by Terry Malts, who love to be hidden behind a dense fog of mystery. But, luckily, my imaginary best friend over at Finest Kiss hints that the band is a side-project of Magic Bullets, making the “I’m Neurotic” single even closer to my heart. Apparently the group are aligning themselves with the likes of the Ramones or even the Descendents, but really it’s hard to hear that. For me, it has a feel of the lighter side of Creation Records, yet another reason for my adoration. The single is out now, so get ahold of it while you can.

So we here at ATH love us some Will Johnson and always pay attention to the guy when he drops some new music our way. This new number “Tangle for the Less” appears on a brand new EP entitled Little Raider that is currently available now while he is on tour or from the Undertow Music store. The new joint was recorded over a two day period right here in Austin with our favorite producer Jim Eno. You can also catch Will on tour with his long time band Centro-matic this summer with a stop in Austin at The Ghost Room in July.

Today we were greeted with yet another new track from Handsome Furs off their upcoming record, Sound Kapital, which will be released by Sub Pop on June 28th. Again, this is a really electronic driven track from the duo, with Dan B. taking the majority of the vocals, giving his throaty vocals to the rhythmic track. It’s a reminder of just what Dan’s voice can really do when he’s given the chance to take control, as he occasionally does for Wolf Parade. It’s a wonder with songs like these, and the many project of Spencer Krug that WP haven’t been able to blow us away like they once did on Apologies. Oh well, at least we have this killer track to enjoy all weekend.

Need a little pep in your step? Well, then you’ve got to get into The Happy Thoughts, the newest power-pop band to burn a hole through my stereo. The band is releasing their self-titled record on May 31st with Hozac, and it’s going to be one hell of a record, as I’ve already spun it halfa-dozen times since I got it late last night. There’s good speed to this single, with a steady vocal delivery, and a little bit of grit in between. You’ll find yourself yearning to blast these tunes as your speeding down the highway on that road trip by yourself. Seriously, it’s going to be a helluva ride with The Happy Thoughts. As we here in Austin begin to grow more and more excited about the upcoming album from The Wooden Birds, it seems the rest of the world is also taking note. The band’s new record, Two Matchsticks, will be coming to fans on June 7th via Barsuk, and today, the band released a free 3-song EP (for the price of an email), which you can find HERE. And, once you do grab it, you’ll love the spin that Andrew Kenny and his band have done on the classic Hall and Oates tune, “Maneater.” The stripped down approach is precisely what one would expect from the group, as they love to give us quiet, harmonic offerings. So, while you’re anticipating Two Matchsticks, get yourself an early taste now, and a nice cover to boot.
