Sweet Indiepop from Model Village

modelvillageFeel like it’s been a short while since I’ve offered up some truly joyous indiepop tunes, so I figured it best to get back on that boat, albeit for just a post.  Model Village is another UK act with the bouncing rhythm section coated with angelic vocals.  The group just released their newest LP, You Chose These Woes, and it’s been a pleasure absorbing these melodies while staring out my work window into the sun.  If you’re afraid of the female vocal, don’t fret, as they have quite a bit of male participation throughout the record.  Give it a spin.

Show Preview: Amputees and She Sir @ Hotel Vegas – Tonight!

She Sir

Date Thursday, January 16th
Location Hotel Vegas
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $5

Looking at this show line-up, attending this set on a Thursday night seems like a no-brainer to me.  You get the Amputees, who will be playing a three day residency in Austin, plus other really incredible acts that should already be on your radar at this point.  There’s She Sir, who we’ve already told you are set for a big year with their up-copming release, Go Guitars.  And, you’ll get to see Ruby Fray, who won tons of people over during her Free Week appearances, so there’s really no reason to skip it.  Make it a fun night, and hit up the show.

Slow Electro Groove from Weeknight

weeknightI hate to admit it, but the darker the world electro seems to go, the more I seem to be intrigued by the genre (I’m not quite sold yet!). That being said, this new jam from Weeknight is actually pretty solid in the long run.  It’s building over an atmospheric wash, with sharp keyboard stabs bursting forth from time to time.  Combining male and female vocals definitely doesn’t hurt my ears either. They’ll be releasing Post-Everything on March 4th via Artificial Records.

Groovy Tune from Tropic of Pisces

tropicofpiscesI’ve got a feeling Wednesday is going to be a long one, so why not throw out a shimmering dance track to keep us all in the mood to push forward with our day.  Below you’ll find the latest single from Tropic of Pisces, which is the project of Mathew from Oberhofer.  There’s a smooth glide in the beginning, but you’ll find some other stylings throughout the track, including a little bit of a vocal shuffle via computer enhancement.  It’s a track that really has me tapping my toes as I get ready for a night out on the town. His Symmetry EP is full of such tracks; grab it on February 25th.

New Tune from Dean Wareham is a Winner

deanHonestly, I’ve been really happy to hear new music from Dean Wareham.  There’s something about his voice and his music that’s really dear to my heart; I know it’s part nostalgia, but I don’t really think the man’s ever put out something that I could wholly ignore.  On this track, I like the way the guitar work is really airy (excluding the soloing bit), but his vocal performance is what really steals the show for me.  It almost takes on a high note that’s out of reach, but somehow he holds it close enough that it fits perfectly with the track.  His self-titled record will be available for everyone on March 11th.

Brooding Pop from Joey Fourr

artreeksA new year means new music from one of my favorite little labels, Art is Hard Records.  They’ve just announced a new compilation titled Art Reeks, which is being curated in conjunction with Reeks of Efforts.  When they tossed out this new track from Joey Fourr I was pretty amazed at how incredible the former Tubelord frontman sounds.  It might be rather early in the year, but this is definitely a track that’s got a lot of longevity in terms of how many times I can play it in a row without getting distracted.  You’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t at least let yourself spin this two or three times today.

Austin Spotlight: Check Out Some Coeds

artworks-000066541982-o0foez-t500x500 There is only so much light and airy electro chillwave I can take before I snap and crave some Nitzer Ebb or Split Second, so TRUST is my go to synth-jams nowadays. But what if you could blend? How about a lovely yet strong female voice and big buckets worth of varying waveforms? While the cool lofty and airy stuff can cause additional coffee consumption, Coeds gets you a big sound that has just enough aggression without being angry. I get hints of Glass Candy, with less disco.

The band is Meredith Muñoz and Ryan Kailath. Meredith has been in a few bands you may have liked. She is good people. Check it.

New Single From Bass Drum of Death

Bass Drum Of DeathBass Drum of Death head out on a short tour soon (sorry not coming to Texas) and a celebration is in order with this new single “Black Don’t Glow”.  It’s about what you’d expect from the band, and that’s a good thing of course.  Garage rock sounds, washed out vocals, and wailing guitars are all here, and badass.  Hopefully we’ll be hearing about the workings of a new album sometime soon.

New Dark Pop From Mode Moderne

cbd362f71e1718a05ae2976a93d447d2c47c1911After a few spins of this great new track “Unburden Yourself” from Vancouver based Mode Moderne, I’m excited to see what their new full length has to offer.  The band will of course get the Joy Division label from the get go, but I think the band mix those darker tones with some brighter, more polished pop tendencies.  I’ll keep ya posted on how the entire album turns out.  Count me as a fan.

New album, Occult Delight, is coming out on January 21st via Light Organ Records.
