New Tunes From Smith Westerns

SmithYuck20

Smith Westerns are a band that have picked up plenty of coverage on ATH over the last couple of years, so you know we’re going to jump on the chance to share some new music from the band when it comes our way.  This new song that found it’s way to us today, “Varsity” is a great hazy pop song that seems to have a lot more brightness to it when compared to the band’s previous material.  I’m really into it and it’s got me excited for bigger and better things for the band.

Stay tuned for new album from the band Soft Will due out June 11th on Mom+Pop[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/81799360″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=false” width=” 100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

New Music from Julian Lynch

1694Sometimes the simplistic innocence of a song really brings home where you are in life, or at least where you might want to go.  I can’t explain that, but listening to this new song from Julian Lynch really exemplifies some sort of inner discovery.  Perhaps it’s the quirky bit of classical construction, or the quieted vocal that remains barely audible throughout.  Whatever it is, this song is just flooring me right now; pretty sure I’m going to play it on repeat all night long.  You can find this tune on his new album, Lines, which will be released by Underwater Peoples on March 26th.  Buen proveche!

ATH IT Dept. & SxSW: 3 to Watch

sxsw-&-athThe IT Dept. is going to SxSW.

My picks for stuff to see is based solely on random selection, what I heard recently that caught my ear while perusing the intarwebs and names that I am happy to see on the list of showcasing artists. SxSW is like that; follow your folly. You will always miss something. You will always hear about some big thing that you can’t go to. So ,take a chance with me and the ATH IT Dept. and dance a little, because I am going digitally affected for my list. Read more

Welcome Back Twin Tigers

twintigers

Man it seems like it’s been way too long since we last heard from Athens based noise rockers Twin Tigers.  Since the release of their incredible 2010 album Grey Waves, it seems like the band has been extremely quiet while recording their follow up.  Well the wait is over and the band is sharing a brand new song today called “Racecar”.  It has the same noise/fuzz element to it, but with an added touch of new wave beats thrown in that we have never really seen from the band.  Interesting and delightful all at the same time.

New album Death Wish will be available on April 9th via Old Flame Records.

New Folk Pop From Matthew Squires

2486694498-1

Matthew Squires is a an Austin resident who just recently released his latest album How to Combust Your Life independently.  To drum up some publicity for his new album, we’ve got a new folk poppy song from Matt called “The Arcade” streaming and downloadable below.  You’ll catch some folkiness to the song with just enough pop mixed in to keep you listening for awhile.  I also am really digging the quirky and unique vocals that continue to grow on you with each and every listen.

If you’re into the tunes, you can stream more music over on the Matthew Squires bandcamp page.

Smooth Listening with Wampire

WampireJust a few weeks ago we caught Wampire over at the Mohawk, and I actually felt like they were the most interesting band of the evening…this song definitely lives up to that promise.  It’s got a slow steady build, displaying the group’s knack for wrapping solid harmonies around their carefully constructed tracks.  This number is a lot less forceful than it was live, but I dig the fact that they’re not just playing the song by song progression live.  You can check out their debut album, Curiosity, when it comes out on May 14th via Polyvinyl; it’s going to be the perfect record to jam to this summer.  And if you’re in Austin for that one festival, they’ve got seven shows, so keep your eye out.

More Buzzsaw Girl Pop from Colleen Green

colleenNot too long ago we brought you the first single from Colleen Green, one of the many great acts on our favorite little label, Hardly Art.  Today we have a new track for you to enjoy, which builds our enthusiasm for her upcoming record, Sock It to Me.  It’s short and sweet, with Colleen rocking her guitar while a synthesized drum beat keep base like a hip little metronome.  I love the quality of her voice on this recording. It has a sugar pop coating to it, but there’s this sultry quality to it that’s totally enchanting.  And, if you close your eyes, it’s like a girl-pop Mike Sniper, which can’t be a bad thing in my eyes.

Show Preview: Efterklang @ Mohawk (3.6)

efterklang

Date Wednesday, March 6th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 PM
Tickets $12 from Frontgate

We know that you all have your eyes on the prize.  Sure, SXSW is a few weeks away, but starting Wednesday night, we’re all going to be treated to a long week and a half of great music here in town.  Why not start things off with Efterklang?  The Danes have been crafting brilliant orchestral pop tunes for quite some time, and as a person who has caught their live set multilple times, I can attest that you won’t leave this show disappointed.  Oh, and if you need another reason to go, Nightlands are also on the bill.  Dave Hartley, who works by day in War on Drugs, has just released Oak Island, his personal bedroom recording project.  It’s got a broader, more extravagant, sonic pallette this time, so you’ll need to see him perform too.  Opening things up at 7:30 will be My Empty Phantom…from here on out there’s a rad show every night of the week, so if you’re skipping the hullabaloo, at least make it to this night of joy.
