Show Preview: Jeremy Jay @ Stubbs (2/6)

Date Monday, February 6th
Location Stubb’s BBQ
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from FrontGate

Jeremy Jay was definitely on my radar over the last several years, putting out several solid albums in a quick spurt.  He’s done most of his work on K Records, and I’ve heard he’s in the process of new tunes.  His shows are always a blast, as he dances about the stage with either guitar or microphone, consistently connecting with the audience.  For such a cheap price, you can’t make any excuses for not catching JJ at Stubbs.  Get there early to check out Survive, the opening act on this occasion.

Power Rocker from The Coathangers

It’s Monday, so you’ve got to kick things off with a nice rocker, so that’s why I’m offering you up this sweet little number from The Coathangers.  The group’s running a split 7″ with friends, Davila 666, on a limited press from Suicide Squeeze, which will hit on April 17th.  Just one listen to this and you’ll have enough energy to get yourself through the day–banging drums and stuttering sharp edged guitars always do it for me.  If you dig this, be sure to keep an eye out for the group, as they’re one of thousands making their way to Austin for SXSW.

New(ish) Track From SAUNA

Here’s a new song from Denver based outfit SAUNA who, despite their land locked location, create some fun and intriguing surf doo-wap style pop music.  The track below “Please Don’t Go Away” is in the same vein as some of the swooning tunes from Cults, but then other tracks throw more punk your way similar to Thee Oh Sees.  Check out the tune below or a few more on their Teen Angst Tape EP via bandcamp.

The IT Department – v2.2

SxSW is getting closer and closer and this IT Dept. has very little to do with SxSW becasue it is still too far away for me to start getting hyped. O_o

Since we played catch-up in the previous IT post, here is a collection of new tunes for you to ponder. I am throwing out a favorite from Mint Julep, the latest from Bear In Heaven, smoothness with oOoOO, School of Seven Bells minus a twin and an atmospheric closer from Blondes.

Click past the break and you might get rewarded with cheese.

Skippy New Jam from Beach Fossils

We’ve been in love with Beach Fossils for some time now, so we’re always happy when a new track springs up out of nowhere; today was just such a day.  The group’s got a spanking new 7″ coming out on Captured Tracks on February 21st, and we’re here to share the A-side “Shallow.”  For me, the guitar line practically own the entire song, though I love those softly places vocals that get to duel it out at the same time.  If you’re looking for something to put a bit of pep in the step, then get on jamming to this track.  Don’t forget the band will be in Austin for SXSW!

Splendid Girl Pop from Liechtenstein

How this band snuck under my radar yet again is beyond me, but I’m glad I stumbled across their new album today.  It’s titled Fast Forward, and it just came out this week on Fraction Discs, the band’s Swedish label.  Last time out, the band had support from Slumberland Records, but it’s not like they’ll need the extra love, as this album certainly speaks for itself. This time around the record’s got a lot more bounce to it, and the girls seem to have tightened things up just a bit, making it a bouncy collection of really solid tracks. Definitely worth your time and dollars!

Show Preview: King Khan @ the Mohawk (2/4)

Date Saturday, Feb 4th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $11 from Frontgate

Rock n’ roll season is clearly upon us, and Mohawk is kicking things off the right way.  They’ve got one of the best live acts around coming to town Saturday night with King Khan and the Shrines taking to the stage.  We haven’t really heard a lot of new stuff coming from the camp, but their catalog is worthy of endless sets of straight out jams.  And if that wasn’t good enough, the most excellent Jacuzzi Boys will be starting your night out the right way, fresh off the release of their album, Glazin on Hardly Art.  Come on folks, get out and get rad.

Chilled Out Rocker from The Shrouded Strangers

Feel as if I’ve been too mellow this week, so I’m glad I’ve got the opportunity to share this little jam with you.  The group’s called The Shrouded Strangers, a Cali by way of Virginia act, and they’re about to release Lost Forever.  You can grab the album from the group right now, and I suggest you do so, as it will definitely make your week.  Yeah, the track has a thick coat of atmospheric wash atop it, but beneath it all is brewing this incredible sunny pop element, perhaps influenced by the band’s move to the West Coast.  This is definitely the sort of track where you can just drop out and play it over and over again.  You dig?

Imperial Teen – Feel the Sound

Rating: ★★★½☆

After nearly two decades together, what’s their left for a band to accomplish, or say that matter?  Well, after spending the last few days with Feel the Sound, the most recent release by Imperial Teen, it’s clear that there’s plenty more to be done.  There’s always been an infectious brightness to the band, and they don’t hold back on this effort, giving you 11 new tracks to which you can tap your toes.

“Runaway” doesn’t hit hard, but it hits you in all the right places.  Guy/girl vocals, one of the band’s specialties, provides a certain sentiment of joyousness, propelling the album along in the precise manner one would expect.  As the song rolls along, a smile will begin to spread from ear to ear.  This approach seems to be the most successful on Feel the Sound, with songs like “All the Same” using steady drumming, precision guitar play and a penchant for a nice hook to keep us bobbing along with the group.  Listening to the increased pace and stomping drums in the middle of the aforementioned track will have you seeing precisely why Imperial Teen have been able to win us over again and again.

Don’t think that the record’s just going to pound you with furious bubblegum flavor from start to finish, as restraint is definitely a forte on this outing.  One of the standout tracks, “Don’t Know How You Do It,” really comes across as an indifferent jam, yet you’ll find that it slinks its way into your heart.  Monosyllabic chants always get me, personally, but the effortless cool of the track itself reminds one of the great tracks by current label mates, Shout Out Louds. “Overtaken” has a much more melancholy tone for listeners, almost in the vein of mellow post-rock, which might come as a surprise for most fans.  The lyrical line of “it’s overtaking us” provides in ominous mood, yet those soaring harmonies always make it hard to fall too deep into the darkness with Imperial Teen.

While there’s plenty to absorb, musically speaking, on Feel the Sound, it’s an interesting collection of tunes.  None of these tracks are going to absolutely blow your mind, but there’s a certain playfulness that allows you to really get carried away in the listening experience. Take the brief, “It’s You,” with its sexy vibe and sprightly bounce and you’ll hear the sort of maximum enjoyment that band can offer up in a heartbeat.  Whether you’re looking for a solemn tune, or something to lift up the spirits, this record really does have it all.  A little bit of time, and you’ll realize exactly why Imperial Teen have been able to sustain such great longevity; the band’s just flat-out good, simple as that.

Great New Track from The Wedding Present

As a music nerd, I’ll admit that my musical favorites always change. You know, the old Top 5 question, well, I change mine, but one constant that I swear will never go away is The Wedding Present and David Gedge.  His lyrical prowess always fascinates me, and I can’t say enough about his guitar playing.  We’re fortunate enough to offer up a nice stream of a new Wedding Present track from their upcoming album Valentina, which will hit stores in the US on March 20th.  One listen to this track and you’ll probably have to go check out the other 7 albums the band’s put out (not to mention Cinerama). They’ll also be playing SXSW this year, so be on the lookout. Going to be a great year for these guys–hope they bring vinyl.
