New Music From Colourmusic

Our amigos in Colourmusic were kind enough to give us a sneak peak of their new album a couple months ago and we’ve been anxiously awaiting the chance to share some of that new music with you.  Well now we’ve been given the go ahead and today we’re bringing you this new jam called “Tog”.  This new single is set to appear on the group’s upcoming album My _____ is Pink due out May 10th on Memphis Industries.  On first listen, I’m sure many of you will take note of the new direction from the band and may or may not be into it.  We are most definitely behind this new rock in your face sound.  Also having heard most of the new album, we’re certain many of you will want to pick it up.

SXSW Photos – Brian Gray Pt.2

So this guy Brian Gray did quite a bit of running around during SXSW and saw more bands than any human being ever should over the course of 5-6 days.  Hell, this guy even managed to pull that off while battling the flu.  Lucky for you and me, Brian snapped a huge amount of photos during the week that we plan to share with you in small portions here.  We’ve already shared some of his work from the first part of the week, so now we’ll move into the middle parts of the festival.  What can I say, the man does great work.  Follow the jump for more.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong

Rating: ★★★★☆

After the release of their highly acclaimed first album, and then the release of an intriguing and excellent EP shortly following, the whole of the indie music scene has been anxiously awaiting The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to grace their ears with more fuzzy pop tunes. But now that the wait is over, and this buzzband from 2009 is back with their sophomore effort, will it live up to the first?

Belong, starts off immediately different from its predecessor on the title track. You can feel a thicker buzz in the guitar, a grungier sounding bass and a less bubbly, groovier feel to the track right off the bat. It may feel a bit disappointing to some at first, who wonder where their fluffy twee pop sound went. However, after repeated listens, or even toward the end of the four-minute song, it is easy to see and admire the growth of the sound. If this band produced a record that sounded exactly like the first, it would be mediocre and the spontaneity of said excellent poppy tunes would be banal. Even though it is not a completely drastic change, it is certainly a step towards a mellower album.

Oh, but not to worry, the bounce from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart is certainly not gone: the very next song, “Heaven’s Gonna Happen Now” kicks away the hazy start and busts in with the sweet pop goodness you’ve come to know so well. Rolling drums are accompanied by the vocals of Kip Berman and Peggy Wang that are sure to melt your heart into a dreamy puddle; the same goes for “Heart in Your Heartbreak.” While these are both classic moves from this band, the real superstar track comes your way on “The Body.” High synthesizer spins from the beginning and it is probably one of the hardest songs to not move your feet to. Kip’s lyrics are as earnest and catchy as ever, urging you to “tell [him] again what the body’s for!” It’s a dance jam of pure exuberance, ready made for any party, be it in your head or with actual people.

Belong continues on, going to similar places as the first album, with songs like “My Terrible Friend,” that resembles “This Love is F*****g Right!” However, it hasn’t become monotonous in the way that I thought this album might. The group has matured in that they wandered a little in places, keeping things fresh, but not so far that it is unrecognizable to listeners. This effort, while just not quite as good as the first release, is everything that I was looking for: the flair of youthful energy and springtime freshness paired with the feeling of a step towards a new direction that often follows these sentiments.

New Music from Det Vackra Livet

Okay, so I have no idea what the name means, or really what any of the lyrics mean, as my Swedish is extremely limited.  But, I do know that Det Vackra Livet are the Ekstrom brothers from The Mary Onettes, and this time they’ve opted to make their pop tunes completely laden with the sound of their own country, lyrically speaking.  Musically, you’ll find those sweeping melodies, and that steady drumming that seems to strengthen all the tracks the band works on.  It’s devoid of the usual haze and atmospherics that go with their main gig, making this track all the more beautiful.  You can order it from Labrador, should you choose to fall in love with the track like I have.

SXSW Photos – Brian Gray Pt.1

So we’ve finally wrapped SXSW and everyone is either lying in bed with the worst hangover of their life or back at work in a similar state.  To begin some sort of recap for the week’s events, we will begin with some fancy photos from recent ATH pick-up Brian Gray.  Now Mr. Gray has a lot of photos obviously so we picked just a few of the best ones to share.  Follow the jump for more.

New Music from The People’s Temple

While the majority of the work I’ve heard from People’s Temple has been rather brash and energetic, the young Lansing group seems to have fleshed out their sound quite a bit nowadays.  They’ve got a new record coming out on Hozac Records titled Sons of Stone, which hits stores on April 19th.  This time around the band has less angst, instead fueling their sound with squalling layers of guitar and feedback to coincide with a more haunting vocal performance.  Of course, the psychedelic sound might come up with some listeners because of that guitar sound, but no matter, this is just a solid track, sure to be a sign of things to come for the group. Give it a go.

Introducing The Black Watch

You’ve got to be an avid reader in order to catch some of the more obscure artists worth your time.  Luckily, I like to consider myself one such person, and going through the thorough review section in the most recent Big Takeover magazine, I stumbled onto The Black Watch.  At first, references to The Lucy Show and jangling guitars grabbed hold of me, but once I got my hands on the record itself, everything else just fell into place.  John Andrew Frederick writes lyrics the way my favorite David Gedge would put together, just without the idiosyncrasies such as comic book references.  His vocals have this warmth, as if you’re listening to a much loved mentor.  Their latest album, Led Zeppelin Five, doesn’t have any hints of metal allusions, so that’s a good thing here.  Sadly, the band had to go afar, all the way to New Zealand, to get Powertool Records to put out this release.  But, if you like your indie rock to be thoughtful, clean and worthy of abundant spins, then go find yourself a copy. Here’s a sample:

New Tunes from White Denim

Catching up on everything has been hard, but luckily GvsB has helped us get with it, offering up a spanking new track from Austin band White Denim.  This track comes off the band’s upcoming record, D, slated to hit stores on May 24th.  While the guitars and musical progression is definitely in the same vein of their most recent work, it’s nice to see a few decent changes, particularly in the vocals.  For one, the clarity is quite enticing, giving the group a bit more accessibility when it comes to the listening experience (as opposed to the live setting which we know they kill).  Pretty stoked to share this track with ya’ll.
