Show Review: The Pharmacy @ 29th St Ballroom (11/23)

Turkey has come and gone. After the joys of fambly and the crushing defeat at the hands of the Frogs from Ft. Worth, Friday night was bound to be better with a four band show at 29th St. Ballroom. The Pharmacy was in town and we had locals The Bad Lovers, Pharaohs, and Foreign Mothers to surround them in Keeping Austin Weird.

The locals were pegged in the corner of the bar stage while headliners took it to the big room for beer throwing, bass hanging, big jams and really drunk dude being happy (and then taking a nap).

Read on for a few more thoughts and plenty of pics.

Those of you still in town for the holidays are going to be lucky to catch one of the hottest up and coming acts in the indie scene, The Pharmacy.  They’re coming into town to support the release this week of their record, Stoned & Alone.  And, as if it wasn’t enough to catch their hook-y rock n’ roll, you also get some other great acts opening from our great local scene, like The Bad Lovers, Pharaohs, and Foreign Mothers. If you’re in town, and you need to get away from your family for a little bit, this is the perfect excuse to slip away and rock it out.

I know it’s Labor Day weekend, and I know a lot of people are traveling around town, but if you’re not going to skip out on the city, then you need to head over to the bash at 29th Street Ballroom, featuring one of my favorite acts, Natural Child.  I can’t say enough about how great these guys are live, and with their latest record, Hard in Heaven, coming out on 9/11, they’re sure to bring a whole new set to get you nice and sweaty.  Just because they’re headlining doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be tons of bands worth your time. They’ve got Birdcloud, The Bad Lovers, Golden Boys–and more, so be sure to show up early folks!

Dudes, you gotta go to this.  I know it’s in the non-traditional part of the music scene, but sometimes that’s where the best stuff goes down. Friday night is a huge bash featuring tons of local acts on three different stages, so you can bounce around and see what you dig.  Me, well, I’ll definitely be checking out our friends Young Girls and Shivery Shakes; Sour Notes will also be on my list! Of course, some of these bands I haven’t seen yet, so I’m going to try to get in as many bands as possible. Come out and have a blast with us!

Belaire is Back!

Wow, it’s been several years since we’ve heard even a peep from Austin band Belaire.  We here at ATH always loved the band’s live performances and their limited number of physical releases available.  Well now the band is back with a new LP entitled Resonating Symphony due out next week on April 21st via local label Indierect Records.  Until that time, here’s the latest single from the group “This Could Take All Night” which features some tasty pop hooks and irresistible lead female vocals that remind us why we fell in love with this band many years ago.

Also on April 21st, the band are planning a record release show at 29th Street Ballroom in ATX.  The show is only $10 at the door, music is at 10pm, and fellow locals Good Field and Deep Time will provide opening support.

If you are able to recover from the ridiculous amount of great shows in town last week, then you should make it out to 29th Street Ballroom this Monday night.  One of Austin’s rising acts is The Wolf, and you’re going to absolutely fall in love with this band the moment you hear them.  They’ve got elements of surf, psych and all things in between–you can’t get better than that.  Plus, you can also catch one of our favorite acts, Shivery Shakes opening the evening.  Also on the excellent bill are Sexploits and Unknown Relatives.  Perfect way to spend a Monday evening!

Show Preview: Terry Malts (& More) @ 29th St. Ballroom (10/24)

Date Monday, October 24th
Location 29th Street Ballroom
Doors 900p
Tickets $5 @ the Door

Sure, St. Vincent is coming to town, but the best show no one seems to be discussing is going down at 29th Street Ballroom, and for cheap!  Hozac Records is bringing a solid posse to town, and perhaps my favorite on the list is Terry Malts.  There’s a bit of punk, a bit of the gaze, and just solid track after track.  You’ll also get Wax Idols, who’ll be premiering some of their new material from their upcoming record, No Future.  And, to finish out the night, you’ll have Rayon Beach closing things down. If you’re into music, you have no excuse not to be at this show.
