Brand New Music from The Sea Life

I’m going out on a limb here, but the new tunes from The Sea Life make me think of Omaha’s music scene in the early 00s. The vocal pitch is a bit off, even a little strained, but it’s filled with passion. There’s even a few hooks amidst the distorted chug of the guitars, opening up as the guitars begin to twinkle ever so carefully. I’m always looking to feel a bit more youthful, and this tune is doing just the trick. Look to find the band’s self-titled LP in stores on May 26th via Babe City Records/Art Is Hard Records.

New Music from Penelope Isles

I wrote about Penelope Isles last year, and now they’ve signed on for another run with the admirable Art Is Hard Records Singles Club…one of the most unique music delivery services in the game. This new tune is interesting, taking on a dark tone during the verses, using jagged guitar stabs and floating vocal atmospherics, but the song really sparkles during the chorus. There’s a huge juxtaposition between the moods, and every time I press play I’m absolutely captivated. Enjoy this song and sign up to get your hands on the flexi-disc postcard by heading right HERE.

Check Out This Ditty from Holiday Ghosts

pinpalYou know I’ve long been a follower of the Art is Hard Records collective, and I think they hit it out of the proverbial ballpark with this Holiday Ghosts single. The track has a little bit of a soulful boogie to it, though it’s execution is a bit ramshackle. You’ll even hear a breakdown shuffle near the back end of the tune. Never a bad time when you’ve got hits that sound this good, so boogie down folks…and hopefully we get to hear more from this outfit.

More New Music from Gorgeous Bully

gorgeousbullyThis new track from Gorgeous Bully comes with an explanation from Art Is Hard Records; it’s a new song that doesn’t have a home quite yet, but merely meant to hold fans, like myself, over while the silly record plants work out getting the label the new GB/Something Anorak Split 7″ finished. The tune itself is actually pretty simple, but it illustrates why the songwriting of GB has gotten to me these last few years; it reminds me of the simplistic approach that Wavves used, just happier, making you feel good about your spot in life. Rebecca of Whorish Boorish also does some nice backing vocals on the track. Some very limited copies of the 7″ are available HERE.

Brand New Gorgeous Bully Track

vinylObviously I’ve had a thing for Gorgeous Bully for the last few years, so I was excited to learn they were readying a split for Art is Hard Records. I feel like this takes on a slight twist in the band’s sound, which is definitely allowed for someone who seems to write non-stop. Still, lurking beneath the foggy vocals is an ode to pop music and melody, whilst the guitars churn and the percussion crashes around. They’ll be splitting this release with Something Anorak, which comes out on a limited cherry-red 7″ on May 27th.

The Orielles Work with Art Is Hard

oriellesIf you’re one of those small boutique record labels, you’ve got to do unique offerings in order to keep people coming back, and Art is Hard Records has always been at the forefront of that movement. They just announced they’ll be doing a 7″ flexizine with The Orielles, along with a 20 page coloring zine to boot. The song itself has that casual indie rock feeling to it; I can even hear some sonic similarities to Hinds in the vocal delivery…that should excite some folks. It’s set for a release on April 1st, and as always, it will be super limited, so get at it if you’re interested.

Raw Folk Pop Track From Two White Cranes

10604704_602433613200666_2067966193473209933_oTwo White Cranes have released a new single as a part of the rad Pin Pal program that Art is Hard Records is putting on. Not only can you collect some rad pins, but you’ll also receive downloads of new singles from their excellent lineup of bands, which you can find more about here. This single, “Unattached,” is a stripped down folk rock track, consisting of merely electric guitar and the mellow and sweet vocals, but there’s something compelling about this simple combination. You’re forced to focus on the lyrics here while the guitar grumbles through, and it’s easy to get enveloped in the storytelling of the song. Take a listen.

Rodents Join Hand Cut 7″ Series

hcutIf you’ve been paying close attention, the Art is Hard Records crew have been doing some pretty great work with their Hand Cut 7″ Club…this new tune from Rodents isn’t any different. It’s a bit of disaffected post punk, warranting some comparisons to Parquet Courts; the vocals are pretty relaxed, however, giving you a more hypnotic vibe than you might find otherwise. Unfortunately, these are extremely limited runs the table is putting out, so in case you missed it, you can still stream the enjoyable number below.

Fall In Love with Double Denim

doubledIf you love the song below, you better jump on over to Art Is Hard Records to pick it up, as they’re keeping the run on this new Double Denim 7″ really small…only 25 hand-cut copies.  It’s bedroom pop for sure, but it’s the perfect sort; there’s this great little wash over the vocals, with just enough of a beat to propel the song through it’s meandering Captured Tracks-esque guitar lines.  It’s brevity will keep you coming back again and again to fall in love with it just as much as I did.  He’s also got this wonderful little EP on Bandcamp too.

Shunkan Readies New Single

11054372_919207408100054_2420515434765103079_oI first heard from Shunkan last year, and it seems fitting that the band returns now, as there’s definitely a movement to give the lady rockers of the indie world their long overdue credit.  In less than two minutes the group cuts through with strong riffs and energy, behind the tenacity of Marina Sakimoto’s vocals pushing forward all the while.  The new single’s being released by Art is Hard Records who have commissioned a rad comic to accompany it’s release, so if you’re feeling this tune, then be sure to grab it before the limited run is gone!
