Show Review: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ACL Taping (7/20)

004_NCBScKLRUbyScottNewton_DSC3984Austin City Limits tapings, which when it is the normal plan, are very awesome. You get to see an artist that typically plays giant festival sets in an intimate setting or perhaps a band that plays very few shows with the chance that you might catch a special collaboration. With the Nick Cave taping, the special guest was actually the crowd. You see, Nick insisted on the ACL production team to come to a Nick Cave show instead of Nick Cave performing an ACL set.

I will get into that and then drop some knowledge on what was witnessed last Sunday night after the break with a few images from Scott Newton.

Show Review: Neko Case ACL Taping (10/9)

The folks that run Austin City Limits, the real Austin City Limits, ya know, the TV show approaching forty years of bringing bands into your living room, always take advantage of artists just sitting around before, between or after a festival weekend. Neko Case is one such artist and I was delighted to see and more importantly hear her taping because of conflicts on the Sunday nights at Zilker.

This isn’t her first taping, so that means mostly material from the last two albums. I’m really liking Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You and we gave Middle Cyclone four stars back in the day.

Read on for thoughts on her set and a few pics of the event…

Parquet Courts Return with New Single/New EP

parquetcourtsThey may not want to admit it, but for all intents and purposes, Parquet Courts are a Texas band! So, as a Texas-based site, we’re going to say nice things; they’re label What’s Your Rupture rules pretty hard too.  With the announcement of a new EP, the band is sure to start making waves again, just as they did with Light Up Gold.  This new track has the same chugging guitar lines their debut featured, but it includes new touches like a bit more distortion on the guitars and a recorder/flute.  It adds another dimension that will surely make the Tally All the Things That You Broke EP another success.  It hits the streets on October 8th, and the band will be playing both weekends of Austin City Limits.

Show Review: ACL Taping of Phoenix (5/6)

I had been on a lucky streak of good crowds for a few shows, so it pains me to ask – Hey Austin, why do ushers have to tell you to put away your phones and shut up at a taping?!?!

Pheonix played a lovely set. Too bad I had to wait for said ushers to get out of the way to see the stage as each of the four people in front of us had to be told to put away their phones one by one. Too bad the superfangirls couldn’t stop informing each other how jealous their friends are that they are at a show they are talking through. It is an ACL Taping. Know your place and watch the show and understand how lucky you are to be there.

I promise to talk about the band after the break (followed by more ranting)…

ACL 2013 Lineup Announced

In case you are a normal human being and were sleeping, the lineup for this year’s two weekend festival was announced. These are the bands that allegedly will be there both weekends so there is still a little room to play, but the lineup is really good. Sure, you can find things to complain about, but a Lionel Richie sing-along is not allowed to be one of them.

As leaked, The Cure is a big name as is Depeche Mode. If the organizers dare put them up against each other, there may be a guyliner revolt of 40 somethings. Who cares about Muse besides the guys that program bumper music at ESPN?

We do get Atoms For Peace, Wilco, The National, Vampy Weeks, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Tame Impala, Local Natives, Grimes, Portugal. The Man, Divine Fits, Purity Ring, Haim, Smith Westerns, Junip, Phospherescent, Thao & The GDSD, Foxygen, Parquet Courts, Fidlar, Wild Nothing and Electric Six, to name a few.

Wristbands are on sale at 10am. Get in line online. Full list after the break…
