Pop Filter Ready Debut Album

We heard news of Pop Filter on an all Aussie compilation from earlier this year, but we had no idea how quickly the band were ready to drop their debut LP. Those who recognize the familiar faces in the video probably won’t be shocked at how quickly (and amazingly) these songs seem to have come together. They’re all masters of casual pop stylings, allowing the chorus to include the whole band for this charming hook that you take with you when the song’s done playing through your speakers. Always endearing…their debut Banksia will be out on August 21st via Spunk/Bobo Integral/Osborne Again.

Please to Meet You: The Electorate

Imagine finding a band that references Built to Spill and Fugazi, yet sounds like the Wedding Present fronting a pop band? That’s precisely what I got when I first pressed play on this single from the forthcoming LP from The Electorate. I immediately fell in love with the energy from the start; it’s propelling your forward, carefully nodding towards its own pop sensibility. The guitars are heavy and jangling, sounding like the strings are loose as the trio furiously push the track forward; its such a killer sound that I can’t get enough of at the moment. This song appears on the group’s brand new album You Don’t Have Time to Stay Lost, out soon via Templebear Records.

Jade Imagine Share Coastal Pines

I’m always digging on what Jade Imagine is working on, and this new single from the band is probably one of my favorites from their forthcoming EP, You Remind Me of Something I Lost. There’s a steady rhythm section that helps keep the ship steered straight on this one, with the guitar lines sort of fading in and out of the mix, shimmering here, evaporating there. Jade McInally’s voice meanders through the paths of dreamy pop with this cool indifference, seemingly shrugging off whatever surrounds her as she veers to song towards its melodic best. Their new EP will be officially out on June 5th.

Enjoy Maggie Blue by Dead Parties

Dead Parties is the work of Etienne Mamo, who has also plays in the New Black; he’s currently relocated form his native Australia to Spain, where he’s rocking his solo work like the below single. There’s some psychedelic fuzz around the corners, which, of course, I’m digging on, though I’ll admit that there’s this really great pop sensibility that rides through the core of the song that drew me in initially. It’s kind of like a chugging power-pop tune with hints of psychedelic haze. It’s a good little rocking tune, and for me, a great introduction to Dead Parties…perhaps its the same for you…or so I hope.

Immigrant Union Share Solider Field

Sure, Immigrant Union probably gets a lot of Courtney Barnett hype considering her meteoric rise the last few years, but it’s always been the project of Brent DeBoer, who might be better known as a member of Dandy Warhols. All the Hollywood gossip aside, you’ve got to listen to this crazy beautiful track today! It reminds me of something Jason Quever of Papercuts might do; it has this sly psychedelic backbone, but it’s wrapped in all these beautiful little nuggets of pure pop and atmospheric haze that truly does move you with its sweeping arrangement. Honestly, this should be the only track you fall in love with today; you’ll need nothing else. It appears on the band’s forthcoming Judas record, which drops later this year via Cheersquad Records & Tapes.

Fuzzy New Number from Heart Beach

It’s been a few years since Heart Beach dropped an LP, but while there’s no official announcement, the group have been hinting at something with a slew of singles in 2020, like the new one below. This new track was written while the core songwriting partnership of Claire and Jonathon McCarthy were struggling whilst living in Montreal, before moving back to Australia. You can hear some of the struggle in the lyrical content like “check the map because you don’t know where you’re going,” which in the context can work on multiple levels. I just love the interplay between the McCarthy’s, not to mention those fuzzy distorted edges swirling about the track. We’ll keep you posted if we hear news of a new record.

Haiku Hands Announce Debut Album

In 2019, Australian outfit Haiku Hands brought their choreographed dance party to our shores during SXSW (RIP); I know we were all impressed, and anxiously awaiting news of an LP. Well, that news dropped yesterday, and the band remind me a lot of CSS in a lot of ways. For one, they have these satisfying dance club hits that always seem to get stuck in your head; this is music for people that want to enjoy living. Two, they work as a collective, curating and exploring art amongst their members. I have a feeling this song would be huge had it dropped in different circumstances, but lets hope it brings you all a little joy. Their debut drops in August via Mad Decent.

Popfilter Debut on Stay Inside Compilation

We’re all holed up at home, looking to our favorite artists for glimmer of hope in the world. But, they’ve got to make a living too, so a bunch of Australian labels like Osbourne Again, Hotel Motel, Spunk Records and more have organized the Stay Inside Compilation. 100% of the funds will be split between the bands, many who’ve taken a financial hit. Now, not only do I love the labels and the acts, but it also is our first introduction to Popfilter, a band that features members of our beloved Ocean Party; our first introduction has the band covering “Romance at the Petrol Station” by Jordan Ireland/Stolen Violin. This version seems to strip away some of the darkness on the original, choosing instead to highlight the song’s natural pop sensibility. Future tunes from the likes of Snowy Band and Emma Russack are said to be on their way too!

Candy Share Clean Video

Calum Newsom used to play with Amyl and the Sniffers, which should warrant your attention, though his sound under his Candy moniker is far different, if you ask me. This tune’s much less punk, and much more pop oriented; the bass line alone just reeks of folks looking to kick up their heels and have a blast. Honestly, there’s an understated jingle to it, which makes me think fondly of the early stuff from the Drums. It’s Monday, about to get rainy, so may as well hold onto some dreamy pop vibes before the day descends further into darkness.
