New An Horse Single + ATX Show

It’s been nearly a decade since we’ve heard from An Horse, but the Aussie duo don’t seem to have missed a beat since announcing their return. They just shared their latest single, which has Kate entering the fray rather calmly before Damon starts banging furiously on those drums. Most impressive, aside from how great Cooper sounds is that the band’s dynamic always has this perfect balance, tip-toeing between intimate and boisterous. If you’re stoked to hear the group back at it, then you’ll want to give Modern Air a listen when it drops on May 3rd via Lame-O Records.

They’ll be touring the US in May, with an Austin date on May 5th at Barracuda! We’ll be offering some giveaways and what not leading up to the show, so keep your eyes peeled! Or buy early-bird tickets HERE.

ATH Day Party is Tomorrow

Everyone is buzzing about the city as we speak, clamoring to find the cool thing to do. Well, luckily, we’d like to bring you a cool hang session with some really great music over at Barracuda on 7th Street. We’ll open doors at 11:30 AM, that way you can be the first to see the greatness that is Daphne Tunes. Check out the line-up right below, and a nice little playlist to familiarize yourself with the band gracing our stage! Also…word on the street is there’s some giveaways to the first 50 or so folks coming our way. It’s free, it’s all age, so come be our friend.

SXSW: 6 Bands To Watch

Well SXSW music is officially here, and as I sit and ponder my existence while at work, I thought it would be fun to share some advice on bands to watch for the week. Of course you know how many bands are in town so the list can be incredibly overwhelming and daunting. After a quick scan, I picked out 6 of my “must sees” for the week in hopes you might find something to seek out. Why 6? I have no idea honestly but it seemed like enough to kick start your brain. AllEYES Share New Track + Barracuda Show This Friday (2/1)

This Friday night, there’s a powerhouse of a bill we’ll gladly throw our support behind; a bill that features Chill Russell, Slomo Drags, Fanclub and allEYES. We’ve enjoyed all these acts for some time, and look forward to hearing more from allEYES…an act that features members of the Sword, Octopus Project and Freshmillions. They’ve even been so gracious to share with us one of their newer tracks, which you’re likely to hear on this particular evening; I still stand by my comment that you’re not likely to hear anything like this bunch in the city limits. Show kicks off at 9 PM at Barracuda, but you can find more info on the FB EVENT.

Katie Von Schleicher at Barracuda Tonight

It’s rare that you find a great Monday evening show, but tonight we have just such an event with Katie von Schleicher playing at Barracuda tonight. If you read these pages, you’ve likely heard me rave about Bleaksploitation and Shitty Hits…and even a quick write up on her latest single Glad to Be Here. She waltzes into town tonight with deserved buzz, and several albums worth of powerful songs that put her on par with the Angel Olsens and Cate Le Bons of the my world. Plus, she’s joined by our friend Jana Horn as the opening act, which means you have to show up super early to catch what we can only assume will be another striking performance by Jana. Doors open at Barracuda at 8 PM.

This show was immediately on the gotta-go list, The Soft Moon with Boy Harsher? Yes. I know both were about during SxSW, but I wanted full sets and the stars never aligned to allow for viewing freeing time slots for other acts from overseas. Double win. When you add in local openers Troller, you have a show that has great potential to sell out Barracuda.

…and sell out it did.

SXSW Awards – 2018

Your friendly neighborhood ATH staff members have emerged from SXSW week and I think we’re all finally ready to reminiscence on what transpired. As we’ve done in the past, it seems like a perfect time to hand out some awards for the festival with superlatives that we made up like 5 minutes ago. Keep in mind we saw a lot of bands, had a bit to drink, and ventured out to more venues than we can possibly remember. So buckle up, hit the jump and see who we deemed worthy and deserving of our very prestigious awards.

Show Preview: Yumi Zouma @ Barracuda (1/13)

If you’re willing to brave the cold; it’s going to be warm inside Barracuda tomorrow night…and not just because it’s indoors. You’re going to get a chance to catch Yumi Zouma touring in support of their most recent album, Willowbank; it’s filled to the brim with hook-laden pop music of the electronic pop sort. Plus, the night will also be filled by two of our favorite local acts, Kay Odyssey and Blushing. We heard that Blushing will probably have their brand new Weak EP on hand before it’s street date, so head there and pick you a copy for yourself.

Free Week is great. The concept of having people fill venues so bartenders and stage crews have a little cash in their pockets is totally a get-behind theme. Now, my epic level of cynicism that creeps in from time to time means that I will give the evil eye to anyone mad about one-in-one-out at a venue. These bands are playing all over town, all year long and sometimes opening for a touring band you would think is too expensive to go see. #value Let’s go, Austin, spend that twelve bucks.

My Free Week rant is over. Let’s get on to some notables and photos. A. Sinclair is a constant fave for rock and or roll. Abram Shook lends credibility to any music catalog. That performance had two-thirds of Feverbones; they are wicked excited for the new record, naturally so are we. Tres Oui‘s invisible bass player had a killer set (#sarcasm). Space-sparse of Soft Healer was a reset. I got to see The Infinites at Beerland as a full band. I do miss a little of the DIY nature of looping to fill sounds, but the layered gazy post punk sounded really rad with guitars filling the room. Fave thing of the time I spent Red Rivering.

Another Ditty from The Golden Boys

The Golden Boys will be releasing Better Than Good Times this Friday via 12XU, and just to be sure you’re tuned in, they’ve dropped one last single before the record hits the stores. Perhaps the best compliment you can pay the band on this run is that they don’t fit neatly into some niche genre. Instead, they employ solid rock n’ roll foundations, filling in the space with a rolling electronic organ and a traditional verse/chorus/jam/chorus structure; it’s the execution and the natural hook that brings your ear closer to the speakers as slight toe tapping occurs beneath your desk. The band will be hitting up End of an Ear Friday, with a larger release party the following night at Barracuda.
