Last Week’s Jams, Today (August 16 – 20)

Let’s start off Monday right, sneaking right in with a great track from the latest Flowertown LP. The rest of our playlist is pretty solid too, as there were some jams last week. I’ll admit I kind of feel like too many people are sleeping on Cindy still, so be sure to check out their latest single in this weeks hits. Plus, it’s great to hear our friends Letting Up Despite Great Faults drop right back in where they left off years ago. Ease into Monday with a playlist of jams we were digging last week…and have a decent day.

Battle Ave Share My Year with the Wizard

Listening through to the latest tune from Battle Ave has me remembering the early days of Wolf Parade. Why, you may ask? Well, at times, the New York outfit seems like they’re hanging just on the cusp of being weird and out there, but they’re tethered by some melodic vocals, tying the song down to a more accessible approach. I like that it seems like the band could get really heavy and release some killer riffs, yet ultimately they’ve crafted a really solid pop song that you want to play on full blast. If you’re digging on it, keep your eyes and ears open, as the band return in October with their Battle Ave EP.

I’ve Been Enjoying This Pelican Movement

kevI probably don’t consume music the way I used to; I don’t thumb through the liner notes as often as I once did.  So it should come as no surprise that I had no idea who Kevin McMahon was, though I own albums with his production all over them (Swans, Titus Andronicus, The Walkmen).  He’s working on his own project, Pelican Movement, and it’s an interesting bit of work; the core of the song rests on airy vocals and a strummed acoustic guitar, but he fills the empty space with atmospherics, both discordant and harmonious, creating this huge wall of sound that’s sure to capture your attention.  Look for his split 7″ with Battle Ave. today!
