Show Preview: Austin Jukebox #4 – Saturday @ Beerland

jukeboxAs of right now, there’s a very very top secret guest headlining this event at Beerland Saturday night. We’ve been told it’ll either have all of Austin running to the venue…or you’ll just say “I don’t know who that is.” But…guests aside…the line-up of openers is remarkable enough to get you out on Saturday night. Jerry DeCicca(of the Black Swans) will set the mood for you early on, opening the night shortly after doors at 9 PM. Then you’ve got the powerhouse noisemakers from Burnt Skull, who always remind me that I need to go back and revisit Sewer Birth, their album from 12XU. Then of course, you get one of Austin’s most underrated, Knife in the Water…who have great news themselves…with an album on the way, and a reissue on vinyl too. All in all, even if you don’t know the headliner…don’t you wanna end up at Beerland? Stay tuned on twitter and Facebook for news of this very special guest!

Tickets for the show will be a measly $5 at the door!

ATX Saturday Show Spotlight – 12/19

Austin, I love you.The weekend is filled with Holiday parties and various shows celebrating such a time, but Saturday night is where you’ll find your money best spent; there are two incredible shows that are must sees in my eyes. On one hand, you’ve got the 12XU XXXMas Revue at Beerland, featuring Sweet Talk, OBN IIIs, Flesh Lights, Xetas and more; it’s important to note that all those bands have at some point been at the top in our year end lists. While that’s a rock laden show, a block away you can indulge your pop fandom by hitting up Moving Panoramas, Ramesh and Young Girls over at Barracuda. A few of these acts are on our label (with a new Young Girls LP on its way), so you know we’ll be there…though considering the line-up, I’m looking to bounce back and forth all night long.

Local Shows Tonight: Video Album Release + Nick Allison

videoI’m gearing up to go to as many great shows as I can this week, and it all starts this evening. Austinites have the chance to see tons of stuff, but tonight, here’s where you should be: Beerland or Hotel Vegas. Beerland will host the Video album release for the group’s new record…kicking off at 9 PM. Vegas has Nick Allison kicking off his tour with our friends Lochness Mobsters, as well as Lung Letters. Seems like Wednesday is destined for rock n’ roll. Stream tracks below and see what suits your fancy…regardless, you’ll be happy at either of these spots.

ATH Premiere: New Single from Video

videoAustin’s Video signing to Third Man Records might have come as a surprise to many, but what shouldn’t surprise you is how incredibly strong the band actually is at this point. Their “New Immortals” single had this huge power-pop feel, but in some way, it still felt rather dangerous. The B-Side, which is a live version of “Nothing Lasts Forever” brings on a barrage of noise and high-speed energy, punishing your ears in the best way. Singer Daniel Fried unleashes his best snarl through your speakers; he does so with such ferocity that one likely sees it as a call to incite a riot (in an orderly fashion; I don’t condone violence). Their full LP, The Entertainers, will be out via the label on October 30th, but you can grab the 7″ featuring this B-Side right HERE.

The band will be playing a release show too on October 28th over at Beerland.

SXSW Superlatives: Nathan.Lankford

AlvvaysWith SXSW this year there was lots of hubbub about fewer bands and less corporate entities flooding the streets, but despite all that, I still managed to have myself a good old time.  I’ve got some thoughts and awards to hand out, and these are strictly my experience, as we tried at ATH to split up and cover as much as we possibly could.  You can read on, if you’ve got the time, to see what I had to say.  Read more

Two Show Preview: Gotobeds and Alvvays on Friday Night (11.21)

alThe weather’s been cold, and it’s not likely to get any better on Friday, but you’ll find some solace knowing there are two different shows indoors worth attending.  Those of you in the need for rock n’ roll, make your way over to Beerland for the Gotobeds.  They come into town having released the excellent Poor People Are Revolting, which you should have gotten. They’ll be joined by Mystic Inane and local heavyweights Empty Markets.  But, some of you look for a little bit of pop in your life, and you’ll be lucky to know that Alvvays and Absolutely Free bringing some joyous sounds to Red 7; it’s a $12 and indoors as well, so you can keep warm while you enjoy your tunes.  Just be sure to enjoy yourself, wherever you find your fun.

Show Preview: Dark Blue @ Beerland (10.2)

ceremonyThe town is about to be billowing over with traffic; you know you’re going to be filled with angst, especially if you live near Barton Springs Rd, so why not get that anger out with a really rad rock n’ roll show at Beerland on Thursday.  I’ve covered a lot of the tunes from Dark Blue, who are sort of a lesser-known super group of sorts (Paint it Black, Strand of Oaks, Ceremony); their music is this darkened rock n’ roll that’s had me hooked for weeks.  But, if that’s not enough to get you out, then just look at the incredible line-up featuring great local acts Total Abuse, Video and Xetas; there’s not a better bill in town, I promise.  Check out Pure Reality below, the new LP from Dark Blue.
