Blonde Redhead Share Before Single

I thought I had our musical coverage all planned out today, but it’s hard to pass on a Blonde Redhead track, right? This new single does seem like the perfect bit of coffee pop, with Kazu’s vocals pushed way up in the front, as the texture operate in the background. My ears, at this early moment in the morning, feel like there’s sort of two songs going on behind her, only adding the depth; the percussive element seems separate from the work of the keys, like two distinctive pieces working in unison to build a backdrop for the vocals. You almost get this sort of jazz brunch feel, and yet, somehow, all these years later, the group still manage to make their work seem fresh and stunning. They’ll release Sit Down for Dinner on September 29th via section1.

Special Friend Share Before Video

Two things that Special Friendhave going for them at the moment…1) they reference a mix of Yo La Tengo/the Pastels in their sound 2) they hail from the same scene that’s given us recent faves like En Attendant Ana and Marble Arch. I mean, that would be enough, usually, but they’ve also go the songwriting chops to back that up. I love the casual quality of the guitars, sharp chords ringing brightly before quieted picking comes in. They also meld their vocals perfectly, with huge shared melodies that should warm any fan of good pop music. They’ll be releasing their new EP on September 27th via Howlin Banana Records!

Take A Listen to Cotillon

cotyWhen you get an email about a new act on Burger Records, you generally know what to expect from the label…that is until you hear the work of Cotillon.  It’s this dreamy little bit of bedroom pop, akin to the work of early Captured Tracks acts.  The LA act worked with JR from Girls, so you can count on the production quality to be successful when the band release their full album.  Personally, I love the way the song slowly fades out over about a minute, growing softer and softer until you can no longer hear it.  Look for the group’s self-titled album to come out on January 26th.
