In a week of packed shows, Wednesday was definitely full of shows, from Spoon to Real Estate to Bowerbirds to Keep Shelley in Athens, and we found ourselves at several…actually, all but Spoon. Read on for a few brief notes on Twerps and Real Estate, and Brian Gray’s excellent photos.
Amid all the hype and recent accolades, Cloud Nothings breezed into town, only to be pushed outside by the Sony Vita Lounge. The redesigned Red 7 definitely provided an awkward pre-show ambiance, but as we would soon find out, nothing was going to stop Cloud Nothings.
The former Pavement singer/guitarist returned to Austin at the newly renovated Mohawk, but he was here to promote Mirror Traffic–no hopes of Pavement songs! Local boys TV Torso opened up the gig, and Nurses were the middling act on a pretty laid back evening over at the Mohawk.
Alison Mosshart gets a lot of credit for her prowess as a front woman, both for The Kills and Dead Weather. We had to see for ourself how her new album was going to play out, plus we got to see our favorites Jeff the Brotherhood in the process.

Over here at ATH we’ve been raving about Tiger Waves for some time, but we hadn’t seen the young band in the live setting just yet. So, we jumped at the chance to catch the boys over at Frank, along with a few other local Austin acts, Milk Thistle and Gentleman Rogues.

Having seen Modest Mouse on several occasions, and in various settings, I headed off to Stubbs this past Tuesday a little skeptical of what I’d see. Before I get onto that, let’s skip ahead to talk about opener Talkdemonic.

The last time I caught the Drums, I was a bit skeptical about their live show. While entertaining, there were some discrepancies in the live sound, so I wasn’t sure of what I would catch at The Parish on Sunday night. For the most part, I left feeling moderately surprised.
