Let’s Have More Big Thief

What else can we possibly say about Brooklyn based Big Thief at this point? We’ve been posting about their music since the very beginning and have continually hyped the band ever since. A we previously reported, the band is returning this year with their second planned release of 2019 entitled Two Hands. Prior to the upcoming October 11th release date, we have been treated to another new single called “Forgotten Eyes”. This one is much more of a ballad of sorts when compared to the prior single, and features some hints of Americana here and there. This is sure to be another great release. Pre-orders are live here via 4AD.

Sheer Beauty From No Vacation

Hey now and happy Tuesday! Recent Brooklyn by way of San Francsisco transplant, No Vacation, has been building up a lot of buzz over the last few years with their whimsical, light and dreamy sound. This year the band plans to release a new EP entitled Phasing which is sure to yet again please the ever growing fan base. Prior to the October release date for the extended player, the band just dropped this new single “Estrangers”. It is another stellar entry in the band’s catalog which is helping to establish them as one of the best dream pop bands around.

Phasing will be released on October 18th via Topshelf Records.

Shadow Monster Share Punching Bag Video

I’m a sucker for singles; I get songs stuck way inside my head, like the latest single from Brooklyn’s Shadow Monster. For a two piece, this tune packs a lot of punch, a combination of the distortion ringing out from Gillian Visco’s guitar and the crashing cymbal (and fill) work put down by drummer John Swanson. Visco has this softness to her voice, also present in the guitar notes beneath the first layer of fuzz; it builds this slow moving tension, moving back and forth like a pendulum of impending release. Just at the two minute mark we get that glorious emotional release (somehow it sent me down a Get Up Kids wormhole), but it’s a glorious way to close out with some cacophony. The band will release their album Punching Bag via Dadstache Records on October 11th.

They’ll be celebrating the release of this new single at Our Wicked Lady in Brooklyn on 9/4.

Big Thief Back Again

If you thought Brooklyn based favorites Big Thief only had one album planned for this year, well you thought wrong. Nope, having just dropped U.F.O.F. back in May, the band are returning with the sure to be stellar follow up, Two Hands, coming in October. Of course a new album announcement also comes with some new material in the form of this bangin’ new track called “Not”. What starts as a typical Big Thief jam with the shuttering and gritty vocals of Adrienne Lenker, eventually turns into an all out, jam fest with heavy guitars, drums and bass. I’m sure you’ll love it.

Big Thief will release new LP Two Hands on October 11th via 4AD. Pre-order here.

New Joint From Peaer

As if Brooklyn didn’t have enough of a quality music scene to rival our own, here’s yet another new tune from the area coming from up and comers Peaer. The new track called “Don’t” features some crunchy guitars in a subtle yet powerful way similar to a band like Dirty Projectors or Pinback. It’s always impressive to find a three piece that can bring just as much energy as a bigger band. Carry on amigos.

Peaer will release new album A Healthy Earth on August 16th via Tiny Engines.

CRV Share Racecar

Brooklyn outfit CRV have ties to Austin, so it only makes sense that their sound would hit home with us here at ATH. This one opens up playfully, draping warm vocal waves across trickling guitar bits, jutting right up against the 1 minute mark. But, it’s there that the percussion builds, readying the punky drawl that scorches the rest of the track; it’s here you’ll find the band flexing their musicianship, offering up guitar noodles blended within the confines of indie rock grooves. Then, as if returning to where it all began, the group slow things down, sauntering calmly to the song’s close. If you dig it, the band release Compact Recreational Vehicle this Friday on all the platforms!

Bouncy Indiepop from Jeanines

Slumberland Records had a great week last week…a new video from Business of Dreams, an EP from Papercuts and a cover from Frankie Rose…but the best news was the announcement of this Jeanines LP. There’s an infectiousness bounce tearing through your speakers the instant you press play; it’s matched by that understated jangle in the guitars that makes indiepop nerds swoon. Alicia Jeanine’s vocals have this crystalline quality that sort of ride the melodic wave of the track itself; I’m not sure I’ve been so quickly charmed as I was upon first listen here…and it’s short, so go on and press repeat as many times as you can fit into the next hour. The band’s self titled debut will be out on June 14th.

Fun New Pop Punk From THICK

It’s quite possible by now you’ve heard of Brooklyn based pop-punk outfit THICK. They’ve been talked about on many major sites for their throwback early 2000s style version of pop rock music and have earned some praise along the way. Though I may have been reluctant in the past, I can’t deny I adore this new single “Green Eyes” and it’s fun, energetic vibe. It’s as if Saves the Day married someone from Dum Dum Girls and decided to have a huge party afterwards. Party time, excellent.

THICK recently announced a signing to Epitath with this song and two others available to stream on the band’s bandcamp page.

A little Something Different From Bellows

As I peruse some emails and the internet for new tunes to share, I came across this unique piece from Brooklyn based artist Bellows. It’s a bedroom pop piece blended well with songwriter elements similar to Sufjan or my old pal John Lamonica. You’ll even find some electronic elements along with some crazy wind instrumentation. This one really manages to blend a ton of genres to create a truly special pop sound.

Bellows will release new album The Rose Gardener on February 22nd via Topshelf Records.
