Gum Country Share Another Jam

Honestly, I was just checking in on Gum Country this morning, wondering if another single had slipped by me. But, I was lucky, as I hadn’t missed a thing, though I had no idea this gem was coming my way. I love the pulsing energy from the guitars, pushing the pace with that steady rhythm in the background. The perfect blanket of fuzzy distortion wraps itself around the core of the song, not to mention the hazy bubble on the vocals; this is exactly what guitar pop music should sound like if you ask me. Don’t be afraid to listen for that slight little pop sensibility gurgling beneath the surface; put your head closer to the speaker if you need to! Somewhere will be out on June 19th!

Gum Country Announce Debut LP

Why on Earth can’t more bands sound like this? I mean, I reckon I’d get bored after a long time, but I’ll be damned if this Gum Country tune isn’t the right jam for me. It’s got the fuzzy bits that make my ears perk up near the stereo, but still carries on that pop sensibility that makes a song worthy of repeated listens. The band set out to make ‘harsh twee,’ and while I can hear that applying, I do think they take this beyond twee pastiche; it almost seems to have a little psychedelic noodle coursing through the core of the song. Their debut LP Somewhere will be out via Kingfisher Bluez and Burger Records.

Sarah Bethe Nelson Shares Video for Weird Glow

I cannot stop playing this new tune from Sarah Bethe Nelson; I know that’s hyperbole, but seriously, I just want to listen to this track all day. It has this light approach to guitar pop that walks a fine line between indiepop and power-pop, though it probably leans more towards the power side of things. Her voice has this warmth to it, while also holding onto this natural sense of freedom; I envision it like that feather in Forrest Gump, rising and falling, blowing wherever it wants to blow. The Weird Glow LP will be released this Friday courtesy of the fine folks over at Burger Records.

Shrouded Strangers Have New Music

I’ve spent a great bit of time covering Shrouded Strangers in the past, but it’s been a hot minute sine Teleport Beach (their last LP) dropped. Luckily, the band reached out to us and pointed me in the direction of a few new songs they’re sharing to get you amped for Night Prancing. Upon my first listen, the band still employs their affinity for fuzzy pop stylings, those these seem to have evaded the traditional pitfalls of pop music as of late. Honestly, when I first heard these tunes, it almost sounded like a more fuzzy version of Grandaddy (or what I envisioned for old Elf Power); it makes me giddy thinking of the great potential this song holds. The whole LP drops on June 25th via Infinite Repeats/Burger Records.

Scuzzy Rocker from Pink Mexico

Friday’s are rough sometimes. My morning started with a locked copy room, and when it was opened, the machine I needed to use was broken. So I came back here to do some work, and I need something angry…there enters Pink Mexico. It’s just over 2 minutes of pummeling scuzzy garage rock with a simple bouncing bass line working through its underbelly. Currently, I’ve got it turned up super loud, just jamming out, letting those heavy riffs wash over me in hopes of Friday morning catharsis. It’s got a nice little ballad-y breakdown at the end too, just to kind of calm things down a bit. You’ll find this track on Dump, their new album dropping March 1st via Burger Records.

Lot’s of quality albums will be hitting the streets this month, one of which is the new joint from John Dragonetti and his project known as Jack Drag. Having heard the record in full as the really cool blogger I am, I can tell you that it is hot, on fire, and full of hit after hit. It seriously might be one of my favorite pop albums to come out in a long long time. Keep in mind we don’t listen to lot of traditional pop like Beyonce or Carly Rae so it’s going to be a little bit left of center, just like us. If my words aren’t enough for you to trust his new work, check out his third single from the release below and tell me you aren’t excited. You will need to own this.

Drag will release 2018 on September 14th via Burger Records.

Upbeat Number from Jack Drag

You know, some days you just want to sit back and enjoy a great pop song; you don’t have to participate; you can just sit back and let the melody catch you up; this new Jack Drag single is one such track. Aside from the first 30 seconds of space beats, this song starts off like Jack’s channeling an acoustic version of Jay Reatard; the pace and the chords are definitely reminiscent of Jay. But, the chorus takes that pop sensibility and ups it a notch, matching the vocal melodies that come from Dragonetti as he works his way through the song. I just keep tapping my toes and smiling. And, while it might not be a huge piece of the track, I love the keyboard/bells at the end of the tune is a nice touch. His new album drops on September 14th via Burger Records.

Jack Drag Has a New Album

Remember when Animal Collective were writing incredible pop songs that had everyone salivating? Well, I think you’ll find something similar in the music of John Dragonetti aka Jack Drag. The very first vocal entrance creates this soaring melody that immediately had me fawning for sunshine; it’s strange how a simple melody can transport you, but such is the power of this song. It also probably doesn’t hurt that Aimee Mann, a friend of John’s, had a hand in this tune, as did Dylan Gardner. Really, none of that even matters as the hook of this track supersedes everything else before you today. Look for the new LP, 2018, in September via Burger Records.

Get Serenaded By Scott Yoder

After many years fronting Seattle based band The Pharmacy, Scott Yoder stepped out on his own last year with surprising debut Looking Back in Blue. Well he’s back at it again this year with an album in the works entitled A Fool Aloof coming later this year on Burger Records (pre-order here). To preview the new material, Scott sent over his latest single “Ways of Love”. I love the throwback style of the song as Yoder croons to us over a psych themed background. I’ve already hit repeat on this one about 5 times today…

Greenway Records is releasing a 7″ vinyl version of the song available on September 28th. Pre-order that one too while your at it.

Epic New Single From Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs

Man Toronto based outfit Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs have just killed it with this new single “Ragnarok”. When discussing the new generation of power pop music, songs like this need to be mentioned before any other. If for some reason that style of music isn’t for you, well move on and let the rest of chant along and enjoy ourselves. Epic. Fun. Carry on.
