Premiere: RG Lowe Drops New Single + Release Show (2/2)

Last year RG Lowe stepped out of the limelight of Balmorhea to begin crafting an R&B influenced album, Slow Time, which was met with rave reviews. He’s already back with a brand new single for Western Vinyl, and you can stream the A-side of the release below. You’ll marvel at the power of his voice, and delight in the little guitar lines moving just beneath the front of the mix. To celebrate the release of the single, RG Lowe will be playing a ridiculously stacked bill over at Sahara Lounge. His labelmate Caroline Says will be playing, along with perennial ATH favorites Taft and Batty Jr. Plus, it’s an early show, so you can roll right over after that work happy hour; Doors open at 7:30, with music kicking off at 8. See you there!

New Music from Little Tornados and Caroline Says

Surely you know how much we adore Caroline Says, the project of Caroline Sallee (of Pollen Rx fame). Today, we happily bring you a collaboration between Little Tornados and Caroline Says. Oh, and did we mention that Little Tornados is the work of David Thayer and Laetitia Sadler (of Stereolab)! Together they’ve crafted this gentle pop excursion into the underbelly of psychedelia; careful guitar lines blend with beautiful little harmonies, culminating in this enchanting wash of escapism. This song is being made available by River Jones Music, with the full length album, Apocalypse, scheduled to drop in January of next year. Feel free to lose yourself in the entirety of this song.

Balmorhea / Caroline Says @ Stateside at the Paramount (09.22.17)

Whenever the opportunity arises to catch local instrumentalists, Balmorhea as the 6-piece live incarnation of Rob Lowe and Michael Muller’s cathartic project, we at Austin Town Hall jump all over it. Friday night’s album release party at the fantastic Stateside at the Paramount Theater stage for the band’s enthralling sixth LP, Clear Language was no exception. Follow the jump for more on the show. Read more

Caroline Says Drops Video

We’d be remiss if we didn’t support our friends in Caroline Says, especially considering they just dropped this brand new video and single. Plus, this is one of my favorite tracks on 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Cant Be Wrong; it has this almost dream pop vibe to it with understated jangling guitars, balanced perfectly by the heavy tones of Caroline’s voice. The group is quickly gaining new fans (even P4K got in on the action), so don’t be left out in the cold…get hip to Caroline Says! The record will drop on August 4th via Western Vinyl.

Show Pics: Caroline Says and Growl @ ABGB

This show was a while back. I brought along the camera just for fun, even through it was a date night/friend dinner, as I hadn’t shot at ABGB. I figure I might as well share pics even though I am still learning a new camera system. On tap, besides the beer, was Caroline Says and ATH Records‘ own Growl. Both bands are chock full of familiar friendly faces. So, delicious pizza, great beer, wife, friends that joined for dinner, Team ATH Records, two solid sets in a unique venue, lovely evening had.

Have You Listened to Caroline Says

Caroline Sallee is a good friend of ours over here at ATH; she’s one of the guitarists in our ownPollen RX, but we wanted to make sure you were aware of her solo work as Caroline Says. Not too long ago she released 50,000 Elvis Fans Cant Be Wrong via bandcamp and a handful of tapes…now it’s getting the reissue treatment from the revered Western Vinyl. This song’s a great introduction, mostly working with intimate picking and Caroline’s voice; there are some slight atmospheric touches atop too (including vocals towards the tracks end). It’s the sort of song that lets you sit at your window with a cup of coffee in hand, gazing into the distance as your mind drifts in and out. It’s a winner for sure. Look for the reissue on August 4th!

SXSW Awards – 2017

How is it possible we’re already through SXSW hangover week? It seems like only yesterday the ATH crew was hanging at Hotel Vegas, with Lone Star in hand, kicking off the week a couple of Sundays ago with the awesome lineup put together by Nathan and our boy Mr. Laird. As always, we move on, reflect on the fun behind us, and plan for the next great lineup or festival. Such is the beauty of living in the live music capital of the world. To look back on the festival, Nathan, Brian, and myself came up with an arbitrary list of awards with each of us picking our choice for the category.

Hit the jump for our awards, final thoughts and a few related pics from a fun, exciting, and draining week.

SxSW 2017: ATH vs SOTO Party Pics

Who is ready to relive the greatest day of music ever assembled by John Laird and Nathan Lankford? Ever.

The jams were copious as were the tender moments. The showcase highlighted the talent in Austin with bands watching bands that shuffled up to be other bands. We had international celebrities in attendance, as well as every familiar face possible. I took photos, some with an Instax. We ate sausage wraps and drank beaverages. It was perfect air for a whisky.
