Gorgeous Bully Shares Fresh Tune

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I was ever turned off by the work of Gorgeous Bully as they progressed, but there was definitely a little bit of the mystery lost as expectations rose up through the release of Closure. Up until now, where it feels like there’s a return to simpler structures and pure emotion. Even the recording feels distant, keeping the listener at arm’s length, which inevitably has the reverse effect, only pulling you in deeper. There’s this little tonal switch in the guitar that absolutely crushed me; look for it around 1:36 if you wish to feel the same. Either way, this track feels like there’s some solace in it, and I’m grateful for its existence.

The Vacant Lots Share Thank You

The world of music is filled with juxtapositions, so when I turned on this track from the Vacant Lots, I expected the tune to really drive forward with the propulsive electronically manufactured groove. That’s the easy move, right? Instead, the group hold onto a more complex pop feel, morphing the sound into something that feels nostalgic, while simultaneously sucking you into this dance vibe. It’s the sort of late-night feel that twists and turns you about, more primal than danceable, and sometimes, your body just feels the moves and you flail about in ecstasy. You’ll find this tune on Closure, their new LP, out in September via Fuzz Club Records.

Mammoth Penguins Share New Single

My Mammoth Penguins fandom knows no bounds, but that’s only emboldened when the group unleash great tracks. They’ve slimmed back down to a three piece after releasing the ambitious John Doe LP; this seems to have given them this boundless energy that bleeds through your speakers. Emma definitely has a spectacular vocal performance on this new number; her voice is given lots of space to soar atop the instrumentation, driving home the lyrical content. And, as much credit as I want to give Kupa here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how spot on the rhythm section is on this track; the drumming alone is standout work…driving the track forward. There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win will be out April 26th via Fika Recordings.

Stream Closure from Gorgeous Bully

We’ve been hyping up the release of Gorgeous Bully‘s latest for a wee bit, and the day has finally arrived for you to give Closure a listen. While I expected the album to have some fuzzy bangers, like the opener “I’ll Be True,” I didn’t expect the softer side of things to shine quite so brilliantly. You get it on the album’s second track, “Gum,” offering up a sound that’s reminiscent of everything rad in Australia at the moment. But, while not always as upbeat, there are other soft, and even sad, numbers like “Tripping” and “Happiness.” It gives you a mix of everything that’s great about the project; you can grab it for the NYP option HERE, as well as order the vinyl LP!

Gorgeous Bully Drop New Single

Ryan and I have been fans of Gorgeous Bully for awhile now, and I know that we’ve both really been looking forward to hearing the entirety of Closure. While we’re still a few days away from its release, the band has shared this fuzzed out pop banger. The opening rift has this driving energy that sort of creates this casual head bob, matched by the pounding rhythm section. When the vocals come in, they craft this heavier dreamy vibe, washing over the entirety of the track to create more pop sensibility. Plus, you can’t ask for more from a band when they promise “I’ll be true/I’ll be kind.” Probably one of my favorite things coming out of the UK the last few years; grab your new LP HERE from Breakfast Records.

Brand New Gorgeous Bully

Gorgeous Bully have long been on our radar over here at ATH, and when they dropped this new single we, of course, had to get it up. I love the guitar sound that immediately jumps in; it’s heavy and foreboding, with just a hint of harmony…akin to some of the late moments when Sonic Youth took a stab at pop sensibility. The vocals stand back just a bit in the mix with a coat of distortion atop, giving a touch of grit to the song’s presentation. And as always is the case with the band, there’s no shying away from melody, ingraining the track in your head. They’ll be releasing Closure via Breakfast Records real soon!
