Another Great Ballad from Tom Brosseau

tombroI’ve really been stuck on a Tom Brosseau kick of late, expecting his forthcoming North Dakota Impressions to really catch on with the rest of you. I mean, just listen to this song and tell me you’re not in love with his voice; it’s got a faint little vocal quiver as he reaches for the loftier notes on the scale. This song doesn’t even need percussion, it’s that good; the entirety is carried by gentle guitar work, a contrasting guitar solo and Brosseau…that’s simply enough for me. Crossbill Records are releasing the new LP on September 16th.

Tom Brosseau Nods Towards North Dakota

tombroThere’s two sides to this new track from Tom Brosseau: the music and the story. Musically, I think you’ll clearly see that Tom’s voice carries the track the moment it entered above the guitar; the arrangements behind his strumming aid the song’s emotional pull, but the voice wins. Still, I’m attached to the story or the soul of the song, with Brosseau admitting the track revolves around finding familiarity for home no matter where you are. As a traveler, it’s always nice to see a touch of home, especially when you’ve been gone for some time, like being on tour or living in a different country. It’s always nice to be home, or feel home, even if you’r not there. His new album, North Dakota Impressions, will leave its mark on you September 16th via Crossbill Records.

Melancholy Storytelling from Tom Brosseau

tommyboyI can’t say that I’ve been too familiar with Tom Brosseau up until this point, but after listening to a great deal of his new work, I think I’m going to join in with the applause.  He’s got a classic style to songwriting; it’s one that puts him next to old work of Kelley Stoltz and M. Ward.  There’s a transparency in his narratives, but there’s also a sound that I recall hearing around my house as a young kid….later in my smoke-filled one-bedroom apartment.  His new effort Perfect Abandon will find it’s way into the traditional American cannon when it’s released on March 3rd via Crossbill Records.

Singer-Songwriter Craftsmanship from Tom Brosseau

tommyI always feel as if the weather dictates my listening patterns; I run heavy and fast through Spring and Summer, but tend to get a bit reflective as we move into the later Fall and early Winter months.  It’s fitting that I bring you this Tom Brosseau track, with his bare-bones craftsmanship opening the doors to that cold front we’re supposed to be expecting come this weekend.  Brosseau recorded his new album, Perfect Abandon, with a Stratocaster, up-right bass and a two-piece drum kit; it always amazes me how much can truly be done with so little. Look for the LP via Crossbill Records come February of next year.
