Digging This No Nets Tune

nonets_nonetsEver wonder what would fill the void left by Conor Oberst‘s adventure into a mystic valley? Well, I like to think that No Nets fill in that place nicely. There’s a similarity in the warble/quiver of the vocals, though these are quite possibly less grating (I mean that in a good way!). The music itself is a little bit more heavy-handed, filling in big riffs rather than careful string arrangements, providing a much needed punch to youthful me exuberance. On October 21st the Brooklyn bunch will release Bright Light, so stay tuned for more of this goodness.

SPC ECO Prep New Album, Anomalies

spcIt’s a little over a year since SPC ECO released Dark Matter, and they’ve already prepared a dark return to their world of pop. Listening through, I find myself appreciating the fact that the musical construction is perfect in that all the musical levels are precisely where they should be in a song…none of the beats hit too hard, and nothing overshadows Rose Berlin’s vocal performance. Speaking of Berlin, her voice seems angelic, yet also pure, displaying characteristics of a true singer. In the end, it’s a pop song, but stripped of all the modern tricks, making it exemplary in its ability to connect. Look for Anomalies via Saint Marie Records on August 19th.

ATH Premiere: Dark Industrial Pop from SPC ECO

SPCECO-Dark-Matter1500xFirst, the name SPC ECO is pronounced as “space echo,” so I’m glad that’s out of the way. Now, let’s spend some time listening to this great piece of industrialized pop music. Sure, I could just call it some minimal version of electro-pop, but it feels like more than that to me. From the album artwork to the sterility lurking just beneath the emotive croon of Rose Berlin, there’s a concept at work here; you’ll hear actual electronic noise construction, not just repetitive bleeps and bloops. Oh, and it cannot hurt that Dean Garcia, formerly of Curve, is the constructionist behind it all. Their new album, Dark Matter, is being distributed by Saint Marie Records, who’ve had themselves quite a run lately. Happy Friday.
