Stream This Slim Twig Album

1277419_569713963095154_1745135051_oWe’re always looking out for your best interests here at ATH, so when I saw that Slim Twig were streaming the entirety of their new album, Thank You For Stickin’ With Twig, via Youtube, I knew I had to share it with you all. So far from what I gather, it’s a record filled with enough buzz and fuzz to shake you straight into the weekend. But the buzz isn’t harried. On the contrary, it’s tempered and steady, the real meat of the tracks. Take a listen and follow along with the lyrics provided to you and hear for yourself. Then go buy it from the folks at DFA Records.

Sultry Minimalism From Prinzhorn Dance School

1c97f28b-6f59-4eee-a5c2-5a0f38d8c15fPrinzhorn Dance School, if you didn’t know, are a duo from the U.K. that have been around for almost a decade now making indie pop songs that will make you dance; hence the name. I’m excited to share with you today a new gem from these two called “Reign,” which is taken from a new album on the near horizon. The second you press play on this song, you know you’ve got a hit on your hands, as the driving bass and snarling yet mild guitar parts don’t overwhelm you but subtly make you tap your toes and nod your head. Then the two play on the male/female shared vocal dynamic atop those slick guitars to create a minimalistic yet sleek pop tune. Home Economics is their recently announced upcoming album that’s due out June 9th from DFA Records.

My Something Different: Dan Bodan

dbUsually I go on and on about how I bring the rock and or roll, but occasionally I branch out….such as today with Dan Bodan.  At first listen, it’s this very quiet glitch electronica, touched up finely with some careful acoustic touches.  But, as the song unfolds, Bodan makes his own entrance, entering with this softness that erupts into a powerful presence.  It’s another listen to what should shape up to be an interesting experience when his Soft LP is released by DFA Records on October 28th.

Sinkane Gives Us Another Hit

DSC02918_zpsbb8fd4feExperimental pop artist Sinkane has long been a personal favorite of mine ever since he split out on his own after working for countless indie acts in the studio.  Though he was a bit quiet for awhile, new music has been dropping left and right this summer.  I’ve yet to share any of that material with you for whatever reason, but today let’s take a second to jam to this new track “New Name”.  As with many songs by Sinkane, you’re going to get some experimental pop music with a heavy focus on the almost tribal rhythm section.  His prior work with Yeasayer clearly comes through a little bit here too and I have no issue with that.

Pick up new album, Mean Love, on September 2nd via DFA Records.

SxSW Film: What I Saw That You Should Too

Upload SxSW 2014 Film 20140308200729SxSW Film Festival is over. Unlike the Music portion, you can go see exactly what I saw.

Going in with the intention to see as many docs as possible, I was lured by several features. Now, those features all have music, so I guess I am OK. But I did still see a lot of docs and few that were very music related. For instance, I was kicking it at The Paramount with my bros in Spandau Ballet.

Here come some brief reviews of things you need to see and some related photos from the film side of the conference.

New Tunes from Free Energy

freeenergyFree Energy busted out their self-titled 7″ off DFA recently, and we brought you that track, and all its glam-rcok swagger, but we’re here now to throw you the other side of the coin.  “Something in Common” is the B-Side, but it’s completely different, wearing the tag of maybe an Albert Hammond Jr. pop influence, which knowing us, is sure to win our hearts. Get into it.
