I’ve got two celebrity indie rock crushes. One is Ted Leo, the other is Heidi Alexander. I love her work with the Sandwitches, not to mention other projects she’s been involved in. It seems now she’s stepping out on her own for another project, Pruno Truman. She’s just released a cassette with Empty Cellar Records, and the single she’s put out is really something beautiful. The music is extremely light, with Heidi’s vocal stealing the show. There’s a hint of rasp, and you can definitely tell she’s pushing herself. If you dig it, and you dig cassettes, you can grab the Amigos EP now.

As I push play on this new track “Knifelike” from Chicago based group Pillars and Tongues, I immediately find myself put into an almost trance like state as I bob my head to the beat. It almost reminds me of something you might hear from fellow indie band A Lull with the repetitive, yet catchy heavy drums going on throughout the song. What seals the deal for me are the soft and smooth vocals over the beat provided by singer Mark Trecka. All together a beautiful song.
New album End-dances will be available on September 17th via Empty Cellar Records.

A few weeks back I hope I got you interested in Joseph Childress, as he’s a musician getting a lot of rotation on my stereo lately. His songs are often little more than voice and guitar, but that voice, man will it haunt you. On this new track, pay attention to the 2 minute mark, where it sort of warbles off key, but in a manner that draws you into his world. Such moments build devoted fans, and many will be established when The Rebirths, his new album, is released by Empty Cellar Records on August 20th. This is your new Tallest Man.
The music on Joseph Childress‘ upcoming release was actually recorded in 2005, but he’s been quietly polishing it up while working on his live performances. Good news for all of us is that the work is finally finished, and it will see release from Empty Cellar Records on August 20th under the name The Rebirths. The guitar picking first stuck out to me, but when Joseph’s voice rises to a slight strain, it all seems pretty special to me. It’s a distinctive voice, but one that I think will interest many listeners: see for yourself.

While reading the press release for Cool Ghouls the name Tim Cohen was mentioned; that sold me from the get-go, but the song itself pushed my fandom even further. On their new single, the band combines psychedelia elements with true country tunes, all the while piling up some great musical accompaniment to fill out their sound. It’s a song with soul and swagger all in one, keeping things interesting for all of those taking the time to enjoy great music. On April 23rd, the band will release their self-titled record via Empty Cellar Records, so keep that on your radar if you know what’s good for you.

When I first played this track, I thought the brief opening guitar line sounded in the vein of the majority of folk-influenced tunes that come my way, but then the vocals came in to play. It’s clear after one listen that main man, Emmett Kelly, has an otherworldly voice. At times, it’s quite gentle, yet it has an operatic pitch that differentiates it from other similar acts. And this is what you can expect when you listen to the Cairo Gang, who will be releasing their new record The Corner Man on Empty Cellar Records on October 23rd. I can rest easy knowing you’ll all be as obsessed as I am with this track by end of day tomorrow.

Not being from San Francisco, I haven’t been let on the great secret of the city: Dylan Shearer. Luckily, that changed today when this exquisite track landed in ye olde inbox. Dylan’s got a new record titled Porchpuddles, which is being released by Empty Cellar Records on June 19th. Sonically, it harkens back to the earlier days of pop music, with a smooth approach to the delivery of the vocals and the music itself. You get the feeling that this song sounds best in some sort of coffee house with hordes of people swaying as they sit cross-legged on the floor. Pleased to meet you Dylan.
