Brand New Ballad from Justin Peter Kinkel-Shuster

jpksI know it may not seem like it down here in Texas, but there’s winter just around the corner, ready for the perfect fireplace listening experiences. I think I’ll end up having a lot of this JPKS spinning during those fireside chats with my old lady, as it already seems built for such times. Kindle-Shuster’s vocals are perfect, but I love the intimacy of his playing style; it almost sits back in the mix, allowing the world around your speakers to fill in what space remains in the ether. You don’t want to sleep on Constant Stranger, which is being released by Big Legal Mess on September 30th.

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster Goes Solo

unnamed (3)Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster has made a name for himself over the last several years as the primary songwriter, singer, and guitar player for indie rock band Water Liars. With all of his success as part of a band, Kinkel-Schuser has decided to step out on his own for a bit and take a shot at recording and performing as a solo musician. The first taste of his new material was offered up yesterday with this new single “Headed South”. It’s downright beautiful and features a sort of melancholic, yet sill somehow bright take on the songwriter genre.

Debut album Constant Stranger will drop on September via Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum. Pre-order here.

Well I’m glad that I gave his music a chance this morning because he is creating some truly memorable singer/songwriter style tunes. A taste of his sound and style can be heard below in the form of his latest single “High Lonesome”. Be prepared, this one just might break your heart with its beauty.

Yung Return with New Single Off New LP

Last year, it seemed like everyone was raving about Denmark’s yungYung, so it should be surprised that the group are working on their much anticipated debut album. This first single is interesting, as it begins in almost a casual manner before changing pace and racing off to the finish line. It sounds like the band have taken on a more guitar pop oriented focus on their new songs, while still keeping a bit of grit with the vocals. Look for A Youthful Dream, their debut album, to come out this June via Fat Possum.

Sunflower Bean Readies Debut Album

beanThere’s been some good buzz around Sunflower Bean, and it looks like the group is finally ready to offer their debut to listeners. My ears definitely hear the hooks and the reasons for such quick rising adoration; I dig the sweet vocal performance of Julia on this track…akin to a young D. Harry. The group hit you hard and fast with their undeniable catchiness, then they just continue to pile it on for the rest of the track. This Brooklyn trio will release their debut, Human Ceremony, on February 5th of next year via Fat Possum.

New Tune from Yung

yungI really dig the vibe coming from Danish outfit, Yung. Interestingly, they seem to be meeting where my own two music worlds collided (or do collide). Part of the song has this infectious power-indiepop vibe to it, while the other part has this classic alternative vocal growl.  All the while there’s this urgency from the band, which definitely carries over to the listener. I reckon it’s just another good reason to give their These Thoughts Are Like Mandatory Chores EP a few listens on its September 18th release date, courtesy of a Fat Possum.

Yung Sign To Fat Possum/ Announce EP

10981852_858314187548139_1090538757766018844_nI first heard about Danish band Yung at the beginning of July with their single “Burning Bodies,” so naturally I’m pleased to hear that the band’s signed to the great Fat Possum label and have got more music on the way. The new EP is called These Thoughts Are Like Mandatory Chores and it’s due out September 18th. Below is “Blue Uniforms,” and it’s an extra gritty spin on lo-fi while still maintaining a hint of melodic jangle to the otherwise garage punk sound. The vocals are just how they should be: fuzzy and distorted to a barely discernible level, and when you think the track is kind of tame, the band launches into it with full bite…especially at the end where they properly jam out.

American Wrestlers – s/t

amwrestlersRating: ★★★½☆

When I heard the first single from American Wrestlers, the lo-fi project of Gary McClure, something about the tune gave me the strong conviction that I wouldn’t want to miss this debut album. Now, here we are, able to savor the 8 tracks of American Wrestlers that are equal parts lo-fi and American rock and roll, but all parts a bit different than what you would expect from either of those genres.

The album opens with “There’s No One Crying Over Me Either,” which is a synth/piano driven jam that doesn’t seem to really fit into the two aforementioned genres. Mechanized drumbeats bounce in at a steadily low-key beat, which establishes a mellow tone to the album so far. Piano, acoustic guitar, vocals join this mix early on, all of which fall under this super gritty production that casts a layer of intrigue upon the track as it slowly chugs along. McClure twists and spits his lyrics atop this slow-boiling instrumentation, his mild yet utterly emotive vocals providing the perfect counterpart to the music. Slowly this song builds up and then simmers down, transitioning into the blazing outright rock and roll “Holy,” which is definitely one of the highlights of the album. As soon as you hear the flaming electric guitar riff that cuts through the mix, you’re already falling in love with the track. This number is purely lo-fi goodness, with the electric guitar distorted and slightly fuzzy, but then you get a little bit of piano that bounces back from the first track and your mind goes to Americana, or folk music. Just wait for the little break down at the end of this song.

And of course later on you get the superstar pair of this album starting with “I Can Do No Wrong,” which takes the style that’s been established thus far and sets it into a catchy track with pop hooks throughout. This song particularly utilizes the lo-fi production: it sounds kind of like you’re hearing the music from a thin layer of water, but somehow this tones down those blazing guitars from ever being too heavy. Trust me, you’ll want to play this one over and over, but before you do, let American Wrestlers take you to the next jam, “The Rest of You,” which cuts out the hooky pop and switches over to buzzy-as-all-get-out rock. But as you’ll notice on this release, nothing is too simple on this album, and you get little nuances on this song—the chorus-like backing vocals, the layers of acoustic and electric guitars, those barely audible drums—that push it beyond your average fuzzy rock jam.

American Wrestlers is a rather good debut album, but one that requires a bit of time to really sink in. Repeated listening has gleaned me insights to my favorite tracks, but in reality at only 8 tracks in length its hard not to spread the love evenly over the whole album. Perhaps with a bit more time the whole debut will sink in even deeper, but for now good is enough.

Did You Check Out the Big Harp Single?

harpLast week, Big Harp released this great little single, and we got caught running behind the show, so I didn’t get a chance to toss it up.  But, better late than never, amiright? There’s really two things working for this tune…one is that the song revolves around this indifferent vocal approach akin to Rural Alberta Advantage; it’s like a little Southern drawl drawn out in its own fashion.  Also…there’s a delightfully bright chorus that’s perfectly juxtaposed to the verses, so that it grabs the listener.  It all wraps up in under 2 minutes, so you’ll be able to play it again and again before you get too tired.  Look for this track on their new 7″ via Fat Possum on March 10th.

Great New Track From Jack Ladder

artworks-000104359373-5o2vaa-t500x500Jack Ladder is an artist that I was introduced to a few years ago and I have been following him and his band The Dreamlanders ever since.  Today I’m excited to hear that a new album is in the works and the first single called “To Keep and be Kept”is available for streaming.  I’m loving the haunting, deep vocal style that originally made me a fan.  The sweet and soothing vocal contribution from Sharon Van Etten here plays beautifully off the baritone of Jack to create an enchanting and memorable song.

Playmates is available on February 24th via Fat Possum.
