Looks like folks are finally waking up to the fact that the year doesn’t have to end just because people toss up some arbitrary judgment list; there were so many rad tunes dropping last week that we didn’t even have time to get them all up. RayRay ran some premieres for Tearing Up and Sunfruits, while I was super ecstatic to get a new Roller Derby tune. We also got to run a really great Rock n’ Recipes with Heather Trost just before her album dropped. Plus, Austin was repping, with a brilliant new tune from Half Dream, and Zero Percent APR dropping their new LP. Give it all a listen and let us know which is your fave!

Field Guides Drop Latest Single Esopus

In trying to cram your Friday with as much new tunes as I’ve got under my belt, this delightful new Field Guides tune seems like its got to be included here. Sharp angular riffs do a little jig around this pulsing beat and 80s synth lines, so you just dive into the inner joy right away. Vocals have a feathery touch to them, giving off this sort of darkened croon that’s perfectly contrasted by the shimmering musical underbelly. All of it comes together perfectly, picking up where the band left off with their recent LP, Ginkgo. Definitely a Friday bright spot for you!

So much good music last week, and so much to cover. Well, we tried to get up as much as we could, plus Brian got some great photos of Good Morning and Packs. Here’s our weekly musical recap, with lots of awesome news, like new releases from Tan Cologne, Field Guides…and Voxtrot! I think the news of their Early Music compilation definitely made my week, even as I was held hostage in my classroom by state testing. Enjoy some jams from last week.

Field Guides Share Margaret Single

There’s some really breath-taking music being made as of late, and I’ve really need those voices in my listening rotation. One such artist is Brooklyn’s Field Guides, crafting these striking folk tunes with moving arrangements supporting the gentle strum, like on this “Margaret” single. Honestly, it feels like this is the sort of link between the likes of Bill Callahan and David Berman; I can’t quit playing this song. Listen closely, as there’s a nice vocal accompaniment that begins to filter into the tune as it bends around your ears; this track is filled with delicate little flourishes that will certainly charm. This tune appears on the new LP, Ginkgo, out on June 1st via Whatever’s Clever.

Skewed Folk From Field Guides

Field Guides are an outfit from Brooklyn that seem to have a rotating roster of players. Their music, as described by their Facebook page, is “feely,” and while I’m not too sure what that exactly means for in terms of the genre, I definitely understand what they mean upon first listen to “Lucky Star in The AM.” This skewed folk track oozes a feeling of wistfulness–the combo male/female vocals atop the glittering guitar parts and simmering percussion make for a swoon-worthy sound. I’m digging the many textures and layers of the track, and I’m excited for the band’s upcoming album, which will be out next Friday, September 27. Check out their other tunes and pre-order it here.
