Austin Spotlight: Keep an Eye on Slow

slowerA few weeks ago I was hanging out at Hotel Vegas to catch Literature (shame you guys weren’t there); I knew most of the bands on the bill, but I hadn’t heard Slow yet.  I was really impressed, particularly with the guitar playing, which was noisy just like it…and you can hear a nice little solo in the middle of this tune.  I feel like it’s our job to keep an eye out on rad bands coming out, and I feel like it’s been kind of humdrum lately.  So, you should definitely keep an eye on this band; they’ll be playing the Fleshlights album release show over at Vegas on November 4th, but be warned, it’ll be loud.  Oh, and this tune is a demo, so don’t get all audiophile on me!

Show Preview: Bad Sports @ Beerland (3.26)

badsports1

Date Wednesday, March 26th
Location Beerland
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets Tickets at the door

For those of you looking to get out of the house on Wednesday night, this is hands down the best line-up you’ll find, possibly all week long.  You’ll get to open your evening with our favorites, Eets Feats, who always put on a solid live set, then they’ll be followed by Zoltars.  If you haven’t listened to the latter band’s Walking Through the Dark then you’re missing something that belongs in your record collection.  The night will close out with Fleshlights and Bad Sports.  These are two acts that I never grow tired of seeing live; they’re full of energy and a rawness that you don’t always get when going out about town.  I’d say your plans for Wednesday night have already been made.

Date 4/12/13
Location Mohawk
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate/$12 @ Door

As we previously mentioned, this week of shows, or even month, is insane in this town.  I mean, this is why we all live here right?  Well I feel like this one going down at the Mohawk on Friday night might be flying so far under the radar that people are forgetting about it.  On the loaded bill you get lady rockers Bleached, Hunters, and Fleshlights.  It just seems like something you should be doing.

All you fans of the heavier/faster side of Austin’s rock scene will surely find yourselves rocking to the killer new tunes from Austin’s Sweet Talk. The band has just released their record, Pickup Lines, and you really need to go get your hands on it.  It’s a blend of crunchy punk rock, filled with hooks and call-and-response anthems.  But, why I love those dudes, you will also get to see some of the incredible camaraderie by Austin’s rock scene, with openers Bad Sports (techinically Ft. Worth/Austin), Fleshlights and Burnt Skull. We’ve mentioned all those bands before, and you have no reason not go go out and just enjoy our cities best acts.  Here’s one of the many hits from the new Sweet Talk record!

Show Preview: Thee Oh Sees @ La Zona Rosa (9.15)

Date Saturday, September 15th
Location La Zona Rosa
Doors 8 PM
Tickets $15 @ La Zona Rosa

This is by and large the show of the week. Sure, Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall have both made their way through town several times in the last few months, but I don’t think a single person that’s caught these two acts will tell you they wouldn’t willingly see the band over and over again.  Plus, the new record from Thee Oh Sees, Putrifiers II, is pretty killer, so hopefully we’ll get some new jams live in their set, not to mention Ty guests on it, so he’ll probably guest on stage.  And if you need another reason, check out locals Gal Pals and Fleshlights rocking things out in true Austin fashion.  Looks like I just gave you plans for Saturday night.

Show Preview: Red 7 6th Anniversary w/ Obits (8/3)

Date Friday, August 3rd
Location Red 7
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $13 from Transmission

As Red 7 continues the weekend with their anniversary shows, they’ve got what I personally think is the best line-up in town.  You’ve got to get there early because three of the hottest rock n’ roll acts in Texas will be opening things up.  You’ll get Fleshlights, James Arthur’s Manhunt, and my personal favorite Mind Spiders.  The Spiders recent record Meltdown is still killing it on my record player, and their live show is always a blast.  And the finale finishes strong with Obits closing the night out.  The band is fronted by Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes fame, and that alone makes it a show you can’t afford to miss. Hope we see you there!
