Flying Fish Cove Share Magic Wand

In what seems like Christmas all over, the last several days have given me new music from Rosie Tucker…and now Flying Fish Cove. At Moonset was one of the great indiepop gems of last year, followed quickly by the En Garde EP, so being back at it again only means we’ve got more great music for our ears. A buzzy entry and light churning jangle open the scene with Dena’s voice soon joining; it rises up and down on the natural melody of the tune, warming you with its pop sensibility. Perhaps my favorite part of the tune comes in the middle where it’s just sparkling electronic notes and the strum of the guitar…a special moment for sure. The band pair this new single with a cover of Heavenly‘s “Shallow” off the excellent Heavnly vs Satan LP (1991), which you can find below the video.

 

Top 25 Albums of 2019

This is the list you’ve all been waiting for, well, sort of. This is my Top 20 LPs of the year. Admittedly, there’s none of the high profile hitmakers on here, but that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy those albums. I loved Purple Mountains just as much as the next person, same with Weyes Blood, but in a pickle, would I choose it over that Martha LP? Uh, absolutely not. Plus, I ran a lot this year because I got tired of being fat, so the majority of this stuff is pretty upbeat and “runnable.” There’s no order because all are equal under my ears.

Show Preview: Flying Fish Cove @ Cheer Up Charlies

It’s Tuesday in the middle of summer, but rest assured, you’ll likely regret missing this show over at Cheer Up Charlies tonight. Flying Fish Cove head into town on the heels of an excellent LP, and a follow-up EP, offering some of the best indiepop vibes this year. I’ve not seen the band live, but have been following the group since their early EP on Jigsaw Records, so my fingers are crossed…especially after putting At Moonset in my Top 10 Albums (so far people!). They’ll be joined on either side of their set by a couple of local heavyweights in Linen Closet and Housewarming. Doors are at 9!

It’s super-hard to really nail down your favorite albums, especially when its only July and the whole thing seems pretty arbitrary, to put it lightly. But, like all your favorite sites, hits matter; they make you feel cool. So, I have concocted my own list of the Best Albums of 2019…so far. This in no way is a representation of the whole of the site contributors, and merely exists as poor commentary by a blogger with too much time on his hands. Enjoy!

Brand New Music from Flying Fish Cove

I guess when you’re on, you’re on, or so is the case with Flying Fish Cove. The band have only recently released the most excellent At Moonset LP, but now they’ve turned around to prep your ears for a new EP. Their first single from the EP has the band at their best; I think you could compare them to Alvvays here. There’s this natural softness in Dena’s voice that creates this soothing emotion that washes over you, letting you know everything’s alright; she gets a little help from a male backing role, but it’s all her show. The rest of the band sit back, lightly filling in the space with some of the best pop sounds you’ll hear today. You can’t stop the hits coming from this bunch right now, but you will have to wait for the new EP; it drops on June 21st via Jigsaw/Lost Sound Tapes.

Flying Fish Cove Share Blow a Candle

In listening to At Moonset, the debut LP from Flying Fish Cove, perhaps one of the biggest changes I hear from their EP is the expansive sound. Any indiepop band can sling those jangling guitar chords and bouncing rhythms into ear candy, but the true greats are the ones who spin things in a new direction. Their latest single is more of a churning pop ballad, with Dena’s voice setting itself up alongside peers Elizabeth Morris or Molly Rankin, but don’t pretend like I can hear the soft underbelly of that jangle in the guitar chords. Not your average indiepop gem, and that’s the best thing about it! You can grab your LP when it drops on April 5th via Help Records.

Charming Pop Tune from Flying Fish Cove

Seattle’s Flying Fish Cove first popped up on my radar with their excellent EP for Jigsaw Records in 2018; they’ve recently announced the follow-up, and today we have another poppy gem to indulge your sweet tooth. Keys and jangling guitars kick things off, you’ll be bouncing in a matter of minutes; those opening 30 seconds remind me of a “Boys Don’t Cry” era Cure, but in the end the song fits with other great acts like Jetstream Pony. In a year when indiepop has been few and far between, this is definitely shaping up to be a must have release; look for At Moonset to drop April 5th via Help Yourself Records.

Flying Fish Cove Deliver Classic Indiepop

Flying Fish Cove is the latest pop export from Seattle, immediately setting the charm levels on high as soon as you press play on their latest EP. The opening tune “Sleight of Hand” kicks in with those jangling chords with furious drumming speed to set the tone behind Dena’s vocals. They settle down for a brief moment on the following tune, but jump right back into the bread-and-butter bouncing indiepop you’ll need to get through the rest of this week. I especially like how “Pony Bracelet” seems to operate in varying segments, all of which could hint at the band’s sound in the future…or maybe not.
