Those of you following the Austin scene are surely aware of the talented noise rockers, Glaze; they’ve been one of our favorites for the last few years, known for incredible live performances. Today, the band release their Glaze TV EP, and I think it’ll only take one listen before you, too, fall in love with the band. “Beetlejuice” is an obvious standout, but I love it for illustrating all the things I love about the band; there’s heavy noise present, stripped back for melody, brooding energy and even a little bit of post-rock thrown in the breakdown…they’ve got all your favorites covered in one jam! I think “Moody” is another nice addition to the band’s catalog as well, giving off glimpses of the band’s dreamier side, containing the noise only when necessary; it allows for the band’s natural catchiness to shine through that blanketed feedback. Austinites can catch the band live tomorrow night over at Mohawk for the celebratory release show; you can grab tickets HERE.
Glaze played earlyish during our SxSW party, ATH VS SOTO. I called them out as a local highlight when it came time to reflect of this year’s conference. They have an effective blend pop and gaze; do we have Gaze Pop as a sub genre name post tag yet and why not? The trio has released a video for their latest song “Daisy”. The set up for the video is straightforward according to Stephen McEwlee (guitar and vox) – “Falling in love is like being at a carnival… pretty and fun, but by the end of it you’re ready to throw up.” The song also makes me anxious for more new stuff, but if you want to review with the 2017 Wasted Mind EP, check out their bandcamp.
Your friendly neighborhood ATH staff members have emerged from SXSW week and I think we’re all finally ready to reminiscence on what transpired. As we’ve done in the past, it seems like a perfect time to hand out some awards for the festival with superlatives that we made up like 5 minutes ago. Keep in mind we saw a lot of bands, had a bit to drink, and ventured out to more venues than we can possibly remember. So buckle up, hit the jump and see who we deemed worthy and deserving of our very prestigious awards.
We’ll be out and about the rest of the week to view the things during SxSW so remember to check out the twitter and our various instagramaccounts.
Either you missed the big Austin Town Hall vs. Side One Track One party, or perhaps you were there and want to relive it. Check out the gallery after the break that features faces, bands, instruments, lights, beverages, scenes and moods from the day and night at Hotel Vegas. Highlights for me were Glaze, Nite, El Lago, BLXPLTN, Tres Oui, Daphne Tunes and Marmalakes. Find these bands during SxSW. You’ll be happy if you do.
Today’s the day you’ve all been waiting for, the announcement of our annual AustinTownHall vsSide One Track One SXSW party.
