Slinky Pop Tune from Merk

I seem to have arisen from my funk of yesterday, so I’m sliding into this clever pop ditty from New Zealand’s Merk. We had no wave, but this feels like no-club pop; it’s got these little flourishes of club beats and dance floor ready notes, but they’re pulled way back, almost as if the song moves in slow-motion. Still, you can’t hide a natural hook, which is offered via the chorus and those little synth stabs in the far off distance. Just really enjoying the fact that I haven’t heard a whole lot like this, like dance music you’re not sure you know how to dance to. It’s okay, let your body do the work.

More New Music from The Cairo Gang

When this guitar first entered my ears I immediately flashed back to a period of heavy riffs and glam outfits. But, while those elements definitely exist in this new Cairo Gang, I love the way the guitars sit back in the mix, letting the breath-y vocals provide the emphatic stomp as the notes turn over one another. Perhaps one of the finer elements of this piece are the jammier moments being stretched out carrying listeners through a psychedelic journey all the way to the abrupt end. Untouchable, the newest album from the project, will be released on March 24th via God?.

New Tune from Yung

yungI really dig the vibe coming from Danish outfit, Yung. Interestingly, they seem to be meeting where my own two music worlds collided (or do collide). Part of the song has this infectious power-indiepop vibe to it, while the other part has this classic alternative vocal growl.  All the while there’s this urgency from the band, which definitely carries over to the listener. I reckon it’s just another good reason to give their These Thoughts Are Like Mandatory Chores EP a few listens on its September 18th release date, courtesy of a Fat Possum.

Missed This Cairo Gang Tune

cairogangIt’s never fun to come home to a mass quantity of emails after a brief vacation, except for when you go through and find a gem like this tune from The Cairo Gang.  I’m pretty sure that their early success has built a broader audience thirsting for this new record. The track lives somewhere in the realm between Americana stomp and American power-pop, filled with this great vocal that I can’t get out of my head (does anyone else hear Pollard?). It’s the second single from the band’s new album, Gone Missing, being released on June 23rd on God?.

David Novick Brings Things Inside on New Single

davidnovickWhile those who listened to David Novick’s last release were probably enamored with his outdoor folk stylings, you’ll be happy to hear that he’s also capable of winning you over from the confines of a bedroom. Listening to the tune, I already thought it was a stellar track, resembling the best part of Papercuts, but I was completely sold when the female voice enters just before the 2.5 minute mark.  For my two cents, I’ll never grow tired of music like this; it offers a purity in pop songwriting, with minor touches of otherworldly creativity.  Your Sister’s Hand will be released by God? on March 18th.

New Music from Scraper

scraperSeeing as there’s tons of punk rock all over town due to Chaos in Tejas, I think it’s only fitting that I put up some new rock n’ roll by Scraper.  The group has just signed on to release their debut 7″ on God?, which is the baby brother of Drag City.  It’s a fast paced jam, filled with discordant guitars, shouted lyrics and an old school bravado that I’ll always appreciate.   You want to unleash some pent up aggression? You’re not going to find a better track than this tune.
