Date 4/13/12

It’s no secret around these parts that Whitman are amigos of ours who also happen to make some pretty sweet power driven rock music.  They’ve been doing their thing around Austin for longer than most and have built a faithful following of hood rat fans.  This Friday, the band is celebrating the release of their brand new LP Weekend with a release show at The ND in Austin.  Joining the guys are fellow local legends Golden Bear, The Couch, and Slowtrain.  Needless to say, this shit is going to be epic.  You can also get in your pre-order for the new album via the Whitman bandcamp site.

New Music from Golden Bear

We were fortunate enough to throw some love to Golden Bear on our Summer Mixtape, offering up the new track “Who We Are” for you to enjoy.  Still, as the October release date for the band’s new record, Alive, nears, we wanted to throw out another track that’s been floating around.  It’s more pop rock goodness from these local boys, indicating that you’re set to have a whole new record worth of tunes for your vast enjoyment.  The light keyboard/piano sound in the background really provides some great little details to this number.  Hope you enjoy it, and get behind this great local act.

The ATH Summer Mixtape

So as summer begins to dwindle down and the kids head back to school, we here at ATH thought a Summer mixtape would be in order to boost everyone’s spirits.  Let’s be honest, this summer hasn’t really delivered a truly great album as of yet so why not just make your own?  Right?  For our Summertime mixtape, we handpicked the best new music from up and coming Austin bands that we think you should know about.  You’ll see brand new and never before heard music from Great Nostalgic, The Authors, and Sunset along with some you’ve maybe seen on the site from Golden Bear, She Sir, Paperthreat and tons more.  All told, we’ve got 20 songs for you to take with you and enjoy.  Our Austin Town Hall Summer Mixtape website features a handy zip file download as well as streams of each song and a link to each band’s website if you dig what you hear.  So head to the mixtape site, download some tunes, tell all your friends, and enjoy what little summer we have left.  No really, tell your friends…. now.

Austin A2W: Golden Bear

goldenbearAustin band Golden Bear are a band that don’t really fit in with the rest of our Austin artist to watch bands since they’ve been around the scene for a while and aren’t exactly new to this game.  Even though they are moving into more of a veteran status around town, we do feel like these guys are still not getting the respect they deserve.  Well maybe respect from hardcore music fans (and crazy bloggers) but not from the casual listener.  To know Golden Bear, you must know that they began back in 2003, and after doing many years of local touring, released their debut self-titled LP in 2006.  Shortly afterward in 2007, the band dropped their sophomore effort To the Farthest Star on our ears.  Moving forward to 2009 has seen a few personnel changes with the band and a brand new EP Everest.  That’s the brief summary of the band anyway. Below you’ll find a couple Golden Bear tracks from their latest EP which you should totally purchase if you’ve got the cash.  Right away you’ll notice the heavy garage rock sounding guitar riffs that mix in nicely with some slick pop sounding drums.  I’d hate to write them off as just straight pop music, but their tunes are extremely easy to enjoy even for the casual music fan.  Their track “Night Lights” will also probably go down as one of our favorite local jams of the year.  We hope you enjoy.

Kinks Hoot Night @ Ruta Maya (4/11)

hootnightRuta Maya is a venue that probably doesn’t get enough coverage on our site, so we thought we’d throw some love their way for a sweet event they’ve got going down Saturday night.  The show is a special one that features several of our favorite local up and coming acts doing nothing but Kinks covers.  Lineup includes ATH favorites Golden Bear, The Bubbles, Bankrupt and the Borrowers, Tunnels, Zookeeper and a mess load of other bands that won’t all fit on this page.  Music starts at 8:30 with a cover charge of $7.  You can get more info on the attached poster or on the Hoot Night myspace page.
