Show Preview: Hunx and His Punx @ Mohawk (4/18)

Date Wednesday, April 18th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

Need a little fix of poppy garage rock on Hump Day, then I think you better do your best to make your way over to Mohawk to catch this excellent show! Opener Hunx and His Punx just released Hairdresser Blues on Hardly Art, and it has some of the best songs he’s written to date, not to mention his always entertaining sets.  Then you’ll get the heavier, yet equally incredible Natural Child from Nashville, intent upon breaking into our hearts and ears.  And opening up the night are two other hot acts in our eyes, Grape Street and The Vomettes.  Probably one of the best line-ups I’ve seen in a bit, so be there or be square.

Friday Top 5: Austin Artists to Watch in 2012

Usually the year begins in January, but I typically don’t get my musical gears started until after SXSW.  So I started thinking about the Austin scene, and honestly, I think it’s really struggling right now (and I don’t quite know who to blame).  But, I wanted to give a shout out to five bands that I think are going to make a huge impact this year in Austin and/or Texas, at least that’s what I’m hoping to see from them.  These aren’t in any particular order, so just go with it, and if you see that one of these bands is playing…do Austin a favor and actually go watch them play. Oh, and we included one Houston act because they’re here all the time and we love them. Deal with it.

Stellar Track from Grape Street

I’ve been scouring the Internet for some time hoping to find a link to some music from Austin’s Grape Street, and finally it’s showed up.  The band is comprised of Curtis from Harlem, Aaron from Frank Smith and Chris from the Stuffies; the association of these dudes all getting together should be enough to get you excited.  But, if you’ve kept up on the local scene as of late, the group’s been doing an excellent job of creating their own hype by playing their asses off all over town.  No word as to when, or if, we’ll see a release, but you can catch another great track HERE.  Stay tuned as we hope to hear more from these guys!

Show Pics: Free Week 1/7@ The Mohawk

Things are settling back in after the calm of the holidays. New releases are starting the trickle in and the show circuit is picking back up. Free Week kept many local music fans busy and there were many great lineups. One of our favorites was at The Mohawk last Saturday. Shivery Shakes, Ghost Knife, A Giant Dog, Grape Street and OBN IIIs played inside. I figured I should grab bigfiddyonefour and have fun.

So with pints of local beer, we listened to local music and I took local pictures. Head past the break, please.

Show Preview: Literature, Grape St. and more @ Beerland (6/29)

Date Wednesday, June 29th
Location Beerland
Doors 900p
Tickets CHEAP

Beerland is perhaps my favorite place in Austin during the summer, mostly because I can actually go their shows since I have a summer break. Wednesday night’s show though, it’s bringing together all my favorites in one small space, and you know it’s going to be cheap.  They’ve got my favorite local act, Literature, who of course are going to kill it.  Grape Street, featuring members of Harlem, and they always win.  Some man named Wes Coleman, who you should definitely know by now. Oh, and The Wolf and Warren Jackson Hearne too.  All this, air conditioning, good beer prices, and I’m sold. So you know where to be if you want to have a good time in Austin on Wednesday night.
