Brand New Stuff from Mozes and the Firstborn

mozesIt’s been a couple of years since the brilliant self-titled album from Mozes and the Firstborn got non-stop rotation on my stereo, and they’ve quietly returned with the new Power Ranger EP. It’s filled with four new songs that exemplify the band’s brand of quiet/loud/quiet guitar pop. These songs still have that infectious quality, and I’ve found myself gravitating towards “Justine” as my favorite on the EP. For those Austin fans, it reminds an awful lot of local boys, Growl. Plus, at the moment, it’s free, but you should offer some dollars so they can afford to bring us more tunes.

Show Preview: Wednesday in Austin – Growl, Lunar Gold, Nic Armstrong

austin_mainMidweek Show? Why not. There’ s a bunch on the bill this week…some local, some travelers. Hotel Vegas has Growl and Que Pasa, but I’d also like to point out that Winter is coming in from Cali…and that band was incredible during SXSW (Show starts at 10). Or, you can head on out over to Spiderhouse for a slew of great acts…Sailor Poon, Lunar Gold, Bloody Knives; it’s a night of great local acts that you should already have on your radar (Show starts at 7). Also, those of you looking for something a little different might want to see Nic Armstrong and the Thieves doing their thing at Hole in the Wall (Show starts at (9:30).  I’ll toss out some jams below to give you some insight as to where you might want to go tomorrow night.

ATX Premiere: Rain Collectors Release Single

rainyThere’s an old guard in the Austin music scene, filled with bands who’ve been playing together for years.  But, at some point the youngsters in town are going to take over, which is where we find Mr. Santiago and Ms. Blair, the duo working together as Rain Collectors.  Both artists have their own acts, Growl and AMA, respectively, but they step outside of these two projects to craft gentle folk music together.  Their new single relies upon very few lyrics, choosing instead to revolve the emotional pull around the tune’s structure, filling in empty space with piano and drums to add extra textures to the track.  For those worried about when the talent in Austin will run out, rest assured, there’s new territory being explored by the young guard, and Rain Collectors is one of those acts to keep an eye on; look for a new EP later this year.

Austin Weekend Show Suggestions

AustinMusiFlowsaThis weekend, above most normal weekends, is a pretty good reason to go out.  There’s a benefit being put on by sxswcares, raising money for victims of the SXSW tragedy.  A lot of these venues are saving up for donations, are hosting events, as well as directing folks to various on-line auctions to raise money, so be sure to help support the worty cause; remind people what a great community we are. So, with that in mind, here are my suggestions for great shows to hit up this weekend. Read more

Growl – No Years EP

growlRating: ★★★★☆

Austin, Texas has a lot of things going on musically…it’s got psych, garage, indie pop, but it’s been lacking a great guitar rock band.  Well, Growl aims to change that by releasing the really powerful and melodic No Years EP.

“Afra & Me” immediately kicks things off with some dueling distorted guitars working against each other.  But, when they join to bring the vocals into the mix, they’ve got an incredible force that really makes a lasting impression on the listener.  Think Surfer Blood if they made a more mathematic rock tune; these dudes are better. Then things get slowed down just a touch for “Yacanlu,” which is a song that really relies upon the vocals to propel the song; it’s good to let the focus shift from musicianship to vocal prowess, and in that area, Growl excel.

“Buffalo” is one of the tracks that really stands out to me on my run through of the record.  In the beginning the guitar noodling in an angular manner really lets you sink your teeth into the track, then the vocals and their drawn out soaring syllables provide you with that moment you’re always looking for in a good rock track: singable moments.  It’s definitely a youthful vibe.

The latter half of the No Years EP is still devoted to the guitar, though the lighter-fare.  “Going Blind” has incredible hooks built in to surround the listener with a feeling of joy.  There’s a stomping sensation inserted with “Review,” which is a fitting return to the band’s more riotous sounds; it’s filled with crashing cymbal work and ringing guitars that are built to break down your eardrums. Then it all ends with the well-constructed long-burner, “Rosie.”  It begins rather casually, with a softer side showing through (and the vocals remind me of Very Emergency-era Promise Ring), but they blast off with the chorus, really breaking things open.

We thought when Growl released their Gallery EP that they were off to a really good start, but they’ve made an EP that begs for you to listen to anywhere you please, just as long as you aim to have a little fun.  Get the No Years EP, turn it up loud, and remember what it’s like to rock out.  Good to know Austin has a voice for great guitar rock.

Austin Spotlight: Growl Release No Years EP

growlRight now the Austin music scene is kicking a whole lot of ass, whether it be pop rock, garage, psych or even hip-hop.  We’ve got a lot of bands working hard and releasing great things, like Growl have just done with their No Years EP.  The EP is seven songs showing their growth and confidence since the release of their Gallery EP.  Musically, I haven’t heard them sound as tight, nor including as many hooks in one short span of a listen, but they’ve clearly accomplished that.  It’s band like this that make it a joy to cover the Austin music scene, as the fun’s not stopping in this city when we’ve got bands like this. You can grab the whole EP HERE.
