Looks like folks are finally waking up to the fact that the year doesn’t have to end just because people toss up some arbitrary judgment list; there were so many rad tunes dropping last week that we didn’t even have time to get them all up. RayRay ran some premieres for Tearing Up and Sunfruits, while I was super ecstatic to get a new Roller Derby tune. We also got to run a really great Rock n’ Recipes with Heather Trost just before her album dropped. Plus, Austin was repping, with a brilliant new tune from Half Dream, and Zero Percent APR dropping their new LP. Give it all a listen and let us know which is your fave!

Rock N’ Recipes: Heather Trost

Heather Trost is perhaps best known as one half of Hawk and a Hacksaw, but as we’ve tried to show on this site recently, their new album Desert Flowers has us excited for her solo work. We were fortunate to catch up with Heather, talk about the record, influences and her favorite food memories. Plus, she leaves us with a wonderful recipe for corba, which is a great red lentil soup with Turkish origins. Check out the interview and recipe after the jump!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (10.31 – 11.4)

Strangely, I thought we covered a lot of territory last week, especially as I ran too much goodness on Friday. But, apparently we had a measly 14 songs run, plus some Levitation wrap-ups and a show-preview or two in the pages. I was excited to hear new music from both Seazoo and En Attendant Ana, both who’ve been quiet for a bit. Plus, that Field School and Heather Trost dropping Friday pretty much made the week a whole pile of awesomeness, in my book anyways. Visit if you will.

Heather Trost Share the Debutante Single

I’m super appreciative of Heather Trost‘s craft at the moment; she’s taking some modern fads and pushing them to the edges of our expectations. Her latest single starts with a soft croon, which is rather run-of-the-mill, but then the song spins into the next realm. It takes on almost a circus-nature, lifting the playfulness all sort of arranged pieces that encircle that steady Trost vocal delivery. Sure, I still marvel at her voice every time I press play here, but still can’t help but be swept up by the song’s new energy; I feel like I’m watching a carnival congo line march by and suddenly I’ve latched onto the end, joining in the fun. Won’t you come with me? Heather’s new record, Desert Flowers, is out on November 12th via Ba Da Bing Records.

It’s strange. Last week, I was complaining that the tunes were drying up as its nearing the end of the year. And here we are, RayRay and I getting a solid 20 songs up, plus interviews and coverage of Levitation. Guess we crushed it, along with our friend JWagner, who gave us some solid Babe Rainbow coverage. Personally, of all the tracks I loved last week, that Heather Trost tune is just a flat out star; I need ya’ll to get behind me on this! Our Aussie friends in Deuce also dropped us a new ditty, plus we got a new Tubs announcement out there. Tune in and let us know what you’re loving.

Heather Trost Shares the Devil Never Sleeps

When the first single from Heather Trost‘s forthcoming LP dropped, I found it a thought-provoking bit of baroque pop music. But, on the latest single, we find Trost visiting a little bit of a noisier realm…one that wouldn’t be far off from the work of Dummy or Stereolab. You press play and are almost instantly greeted with this squall of guitar noise feeding back atop a grumbling drum roll; it’s an adventure into the trance-inducing side of psychedelia. But, a little electronic blip begins to bubble up, soon joined by Heather’s voice draped atop, whispering to the listener through the fuzzy wall of sounds. The new LP, Devil Flowers, will be out on November 12th via Ba Da Bing.

Lots of coverage running around last week, and with ACL in town, there was some coverage of shows and what not. We ended the week throwing up some streams of our favorite LPs that dropped too. But, ultimately, you came here for the tunes, and we had lots of them. Personally, I loved new stuff from I Was a King, Heather Trost and Field School, not to mention the little twist in expectations thrown in by the latest from Smashing Times. Heather Trost Announces Desert Flowers

There’s something bewildering to me about this new Heather Trost track. Musically, it’s this sort of slow organ drawl that begins the track; it feels like the musical equivalent of walking in quick sand, slowly moving one foot at a time. But, there’s something about Heather’s voice when it enters the fray that seems to lift the track, carrying the listener on its back as you drift through the dense textures that continuously evolve. There’s something otherworldly, yet familiar, as if you’re watching your life unfold from outside your body, and this is the soundtrack. This track comes with the excellent news that Heather will release Desert Flowers via Ba Da Bing on November 12th.
