ATX Weekend Show Preview: Who Isn’t Playing In Austin?

ATX Popfest 10Nathan and I were commenting on the plethora of shows going down this weekend, so I figured it’d be nice to lay it all out night by night for you so you know where you need to be to hear the best tunes. I’ve got all your options broken up by days and if you play your cards right, it could be a weekend filled to the brim with great local and visiting acts. See for yourself after the jump and prep with some tunes… a few more hours and it’s the weekend!

Show Preview: Jenny Hval @ Holy Mountain (Tonight)

jennyThere must be a soft spot in the hearts of Holy Mountain, as they’ve got a couple of really beautiful songstresses playing their venue in the next week, Jenny Hval, however, is first up. She’s gotten a lot of praise for Apocalypse, girl, her newest album, with the 7.9 from everyone’s favorite haters over at P4K. Clearly, she’s doing something right, which should encourage you to head over to Holy Mountain tonight to check out her set. She’ll be accompanied by Briana Marela, who is know slouch in her own right, having recently released All Around Us for Jagjaguwar.  It’s a heavy hitting evening of ladies, and it’s only $11 bucks, HERE.

Show Pics: Nick Diamonds @ Holy Mountain (9/8)

Nick DiamondsAfter last night, Holy Mountain now has eighteen shows left. We had a good opportunity to spend a little time before things get a little nuts as all of the people that now publicly lament the venue’s closing will finally go to a show there. (Yes, that was quite facetious.)

Anyway, Nick Diamonds brought the latest solo music to life and brought along The Tulips for the ride. It was a very loyal crowd. We’ll talk whisky, relocation, blips and bloops, failed lighting and “the scene” and provide all the pics you need to see after the break.

Show Preview: Nick Diamonds @ Holy Mountain – TONIGHT

islands14You’ve got about a month to close out the existence of Holy Mountain, and like we all expect, the venue is doing it in style, leaving you with some great shows (and memories).  Tonight is no different, as they’re bringing Nick Diamonds of Unicorns, Islands, Human Highway and Mister Heavenly. Whether you know it or not, Nick’s had a pretty big influence in the indie music realm, and in the ATH offices, so it’s probably best you go see him in such a small space.  Plus…he’s friends with Michael Cera, so maybe that guy will show up since his movie career is over. The Tulips will be opening, so come early, celebrate Nick and Holy Mountain.

ATX Show Spotlight: Austin Bands Play Siamese Dream @ Holy Mountain – TONIGHT

It’s Thursday, and you’re winding down your week.  I think it’s probably best that you go spend it over at Holy Mountain watching some great musicians play Smashing Pumpkins‘ Siamese Dream from front to back.  It’s a cool idea, and even cooler since the acts playing will be made up of members of Que Pasa, She Sir, Major x 3, Alex Napping, Lunar Gold, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Ringo Deathstarr and more. And, as if one of our favorite venues wasn’t going to be filled with some of our favorite people wasn’t enough for you, it’s absolutely FREE.  You have no excuse.

Show Preview: Heathers @ Holy Mountain (7.2)

heatherA lot of talk this week will be about Blonde Redhead and Mono, but I think there’s a show that you don’t want to overlook, which will be a smaller scale show, but equally as good. We’ve been on the path of Heathers since they first started popping up in the small world of indiepop blogs, and I’m excited to see them play live…not to mention that they just released a new single; it’s like an indiepop version of the Replacements. They’ll be joined by Baby Bleu, Popper Burns and Good Talk, so you’ll get a nice dosage of great local acts too…plus it’s cheap, so save your money for beers at the Holy Mountain bar. Take a listen to this great new single.

Show Pics: Crocodiles @ Holy Mountain (5/6)

We are still catching up on unfinished business from last week. Psych Fest Levitation took over all things on Friday and I was stuck in prep mode before being able to post these pics from a lovely little show at Holy Mountain last week. We ran the Stephin Merritt shots from that night, Crocodiles is next up as we finish out our double-header night with jams. Along for the ride, we had Unknown Relatives and Que Pasa.

Wednesday night ’round these parts has got you set out to make a tough decision as to how to spend your evening. Nathan already gave you a preview of the Stephen Merritt show that’s bound to be great, but I figured I’d throw a wrench in things and tell you about another show that’s sure to be a jangly guitar-rock filled good time. Crocodiles, who are on the verge of releasing their new LP, Boys are hitting Holy Mountain to give us some of the treats off that upcoming record. Having already spent some time with those new tracks, I can tell you it’ll be a smash. They’ll be joined by lovely locals ¿Qué Pasa? and Unknown Relatives which should make for a night brimming with psychedelic and hazy rock and roll. For ten dollars, you really can’t miss this.

Show Preview: Buxton @ Holy Mountain (TONIGHT)

iecdyqosugnlarlyzzk6Having released their new album, Half a Native, Houston’s Buxton are starting to make some big waves all over.  The group’s been around for awhile here in Texas, building on their renown live show…exhilarating and full of great pop sensibility.  They’ll be bringing said live show to Holy Mountain tonight, and they’ll be joined by some of our local favorites.  We love Shivery Shakes so much we decided to put out their excellent LP, Three Waves and a Shake (there are still some available HERE) and you’ll be remiss if you don’t catch their show.  Opening band AMA will be worth your early entrance, so show up a little after doors at 9 PM.

Buxton also have an in-store over at Waterloo Records at 5 PM.
