Weekend Show Preview: Beyond Weekend 2

Austin, I love you.Yes, ACL gets all the headlines around these parts, but there’s still plenty of great music to be had, so why not head out on the town and catch a good old fashioned gig.  I mean, it’s Texas/OU weekend, so the streets are likely to be less crowded…and there’s really no other excuse for why you shouldn’t catch a good act.  Look below for our highlights, including a must attend Sunday night show at Vegas; I’ll be there for sure! Austin Spotlight: New Album from John Wesley Coleman (+Release Shows)

johnnyIf you haven’t caught a John Wesley Coleman gig living in Austin, then perhaps you’re doing it all wrong.  Or, maybe you just caught The Golden Boys instead.  Either way, he’s one of my favorite local songwriters, unfortunately dubbed by many as a trashcan-troubadour. On his new single there’s a really striking fragility to his vocal performance, which I haven’t heard from him before…though I quite like it.  The rest of the track is filled with his trademark guitar stylings and blasts from his companion horn section.  You’ll be able to grab this new song on a 7″ from Urinal Cake Records soon, and catch him at Trailer Space on Thursday or Hotel Vegas on Saturday night where he’ll also have a new record for you too! Yeah Wes.

Show Preview: Part Time @ Hotel Vegas (8.28)

parttime

Date Thursday, August 28th
Location Hotel Vegas
Doors 10:00 PM
Tickets $5

Seems to be a lull in good shows, so why not spend your hard earned cash and check out this great little show.  Part Time were supposed to be coming with their friends Gap Dream in tow, but unfortunately, GD had to pull out, but that doesn’t mean the former will skip town.  Part Time released the excellent PDA recently, and you’ll definitely want to catch their entire set to let your self fall dreamily into the night.  Also, they’re bringing Sea Lions with them, who have been fairly silent as of late, though I always find my way back to their Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sea Lions LP. To top it off, Grape St. will be filling the bill too, in preparation for their own tour out to the West Coast.

Hear Part Time’s Track off Their Split with Gap Dream

jameyThere were hints of a softer side to Davida Loca on his last Part Time release, PDA, but you get a full glimpse with his shimmering synth pop tune that plays his part of the 7″ split with Gap Dream. It’s a relaxed tune, not moving quickly, but you get a delightful bounce through the electronic work he’s done on this tune.  It should whet your appetite enough to order the release from Burger Records, but you can also grab it from them live when both bands go on tour together throughout August/September, including a date at Hotel Vegas on August 28th.

Tuesday Night in ATX: Two Great Shows

amenLooking at the schedule, there’s tons of great acts gracing our town this week, and Tuesday night is no exception.   You’ve got a couple of great traveling shows coming through, one featuring a great local act that you should keep your eyes on.  Amen Dunes comes into town with Axxa/Abraxas in tow, which is likely to be a huge success for both bands.  They’re both coming in support of recent 2014 releases, with AD celebrating Love, and Axxa performing their self-titled debut; that show takes place over at the Hotel Vegas.  But, don’t sleep on Streets of Laredo, who’ll be headlining a gig at the Mohawk with one of our favorites, Reservations.  Looks like a great evening for us all…so be sure to partake in the good music. Here’s a tune from Axxa/Abraxas to get you into the mood.

Show Pics: Spoon @ Hotel Vegas (5/6)

Spoon - David Hall for CoSBonus coverage!

We have a little guest photo action for you today. Friend of the program, David Hall, was on the list for the random Spoon show at Hotel Vegas the other night. Just so happens, he needed an assist due to scheduling issues, so my camera was able to attend as his +1.

Allegedly, it was an hour of the hits and no new stuff. Sounds like a good way to knock the rust off the band. Comedians get to work over new material in clubs, so should bands. Head past the break to see a few sweet photos by D. Hall.

Show Preview: Audacity @ Hotel Vegas (4.29)

tumblr_inline_mj08bavIaS1qz4rgpThe shows just keep coming and coming, and personally, this show at Hotel Vegas is a doozy.  I loved Butter Knife, the latest record from Audacity, and in fact included it in our list of Top 50 Albums of 2013.  It’s a high energy album, making their live show all the same, filled with great riffs and pop sensibility.  But, as if that wasn’t enough, you should also be there to check out the local openers, Loteria, being my particular favorite of the bunch.  They go on just before Audacity, but if you get there early, you’ll also be able to catch The Golden Ghetto and Slash & Spread.  It’s a great little line-up, so if you’re in need of something to do, think about heading to Hotel Vegas.
