Looking at this show line-up, attending this set on a Thursday night seems like a no-brainer to me.  You get the Amputees, who will be playing a three day residency in Austin, plus other really incredible acts that should already be on your radar at this point.  There’s She Sir, who we’ve already told you are set for a big year with their up-copming release, Go Guitars.  And, you’ll get to see Ruby Fray, who won tons of people over during her Free Week appearances, so there’s really no reason to skip it.  Make it a fun night, and hit up the show.

American Icon Christmas Bizarre @ Hotel Vegas (12.7)

americaniconsmall-640x800There’s a great local event going on this Saturday evening in Austin: American Icon Christmas Bizarre at Hotel Vegas.  What is it, and how does it fit into the ATH music coverage? Well, for starters it’s like a Farmer’s Market for what’s cool. There’s 13 vendors selling vintage clothes, jewelry, records and more; so you can get your Christmas shopping done before things turn crazy.  But, accompanying the weekend sale are killer bands that you know we love such as Pharaohs, Grape St., Loteria and more! You get to shop, you get to drink, you get to see great bands, which pretty much means that this is a dream come true.  Entrance is $7, and that money goes to help the bands live and breathe; it’s worth every penny.  See ya’ll there!

Austin Show Preview: Grape St. @ Hotel Vegas (11/2)

Grape St.I’m feeling local this weekend, and though there are a couple of interesting traveling tours coming into town (Those Darlins/The Blow), I really think your best bet is to end up at Hotel Vegas on Saturday night. Some of our favorite bands will be playing that evening; these are bands we’ve supported in some fashion since we started this site. You’ll get to catch Booher, which is the new project from former Zykos member, M. Booher.  Plus, you’ll get Frank Smith, who’ve put out tons of great songs, all of which we’ve enjoyed.  Headlining the night will be another band we clearly support, as we helped the band put out their self-titled LP: Grape St.  They’ve only gotten better over the last year, and you should expect a full house to bring things to a riotous evening. And, it’s going to be cheap, so why not hit up a great local show?!

Formerly Follow That Bird, Austin’s Mirror Travel are prepared to make waves all across the United States.  Their new album, Mexico, is being released tomorrow by Modern Outsider, which happens to coincide with their tour kick off set over at Hotel Vegas.  You’ve got to be there to check out these great new tunes, and to show support by buying things so they can pay for gas as they conquer the States. They’ll be joined by Suspirians and RF Shannon on the night, making it an event you can’t miss.  Plus, it’s indoors, so you have a chance to stay dry during a rock show. Be there or be square, says I.

Austin Show Spotlight: Jonly Bonly @ Hotel Vegas (10.4)

1292093_463301757118779_791286496_oI get it folks, ACL just isn’t your thing.  You’re probably trying to stay away from the hordes of people in the downtown area too.  So why not enjoy a righteous night of rock n’ roll by heading over to Hotel Vegas to catch one of the hottest new bands in town.  Okay, so Jonly Bonly might not be new boys, with members of Sweet Talk and OBN IIIs taking the helm, but the band itself is fairly new; I’ve been rocking out to the few songs they passed my way, and I’m expecting them to blow the socks off Austin in no time.  You like catchy proto-punk with a garage rock bent? Yeah, you better be there this Friday night.  They’ll be playing with Trustees and DJ Andrew McCalla to make your night both cheap and fulfilling; it all follows the Richard Buckner set! Oh, and here’s one of those sweet rocking tunes I was talking about.  Meet your favorite new band people!

Austin Spotlight: Classy Nude Release Split w/ Quitters + 7″ Release Show

classyOne of the acts I’ve been keeping a close eye on, Classy Nude, is releasing a split with another such act, Quitters.  Both Austin acts specialize in crafting pop tunes centered around well-written guitar chords, leaving listeners with hooks to tap their toes to today. CN has been kind enough to share their part of the split 7″ with us, and we’re happy to share that track with you as well.  If you like what you hear, you can order the 7″ HERE, or you can head out to Hotel Vegas on Thursday night to pick one up in person from both bands.  That bill also includes other heavy local hitters like Act Rights, Poppy Red and RF Shannon. Once the rock n’ roll gets started, you’ve got to keep it going.  The best place to head on Wednesday night is over to Hotel Vegas for the Grape St. LP release; this is the band featuring Curtis from Harlem…seriously one of my favorite records of the last year.  Of course, you can buy it HERE if you’re not in Austin.  Just because we’re putting out the record, doesn’t mean you can miss a single of the opening acts; they’re some of our favorite, and the best, rock acts in town.  You’ve got Pharaohs kicking things off, with John Wesley Coleman and Rayon Beach warming up the crowd for all you folks. There will be balloons, A Date With You LPs, and just a ton of incredible bands.  It’s dirt cheap, so help support the local scene and come join us for this celebration.

Tonight seems like one of those crazy evenings in Austin with so many shows to choose from.  My personal choice for the evening would definitely have to be girl rocker Colleen Green at Hotel Vegas.  Also on the bill are fellow rockers Cheap Curls & Gremlins UK.  I’m not seeing a price for the show anywhere, but I’m sure it won’t hurt your wallet too bad.  Rock on.

SxSW 2013: Day Party Pics

No, I am not done yet. This one and a gallery of the showcases is all that is left. If I can muster it, I’ll do a best of post. Best-ofs are easier well removed from a festival because lasting memories help define what really got you going.

Anyway, this giant gallery of daytime show goodness includes some candids and portraits from around the conference during the unofficial events. Highlights include Wax Idols, Nobunny, The Soft Moon, Criminal Hygiene, Bleeding Rainbows, that band Thurston Moore is in, Delorean and so much more.
