Show Preview: Terry Malts (& More) @ 29th St. Ballroom (10/24)

Date Monday, October 24th
Location 29th Street Ballroom
Doors 900p
Tickets $5 @ the Door

Sure, St. Vincent is coming to town, but the best show no one seems to be discussing is going down at 29th Street Ballroom, and for cheap!  Hozac Records is bringing a solid posse to town, and perhaps my favorite on the list is Terry Malts.  There’s a bit of punk, a bit of the gaze, and just solid track after track.  You’ll also get Wax Idols, who’ll be premiering some of their new material from their upcoming record, No Future.  And, to finish out the night, you’ll have Rayon Beach closing things down. If you’re into music, you have no excuse not to be at this show.

New Music (and album) from Fungi Girls

Earlier this year I caught Fungi Girls as an opening act, and I remember thinking to myself how young they were, in looks, not musical sound.  The Cleburne, TX trio definitely do seem young in person, but their music seems like it was washed in the glory days of San Francisco.  It’s sort of jangly, but it’s also got this mysterious coat of fog that drifts atop of it.  You can hear the whole new record from these Texans by visiting their BANDCAMP page, so get there fast.  That album is called Some Easy Magic, and it will be in your record store next Tuesday thanks to the good folks over at Hozac Records. Also, if you dig the song below, P4k ran a sweet video for it HERE.

New Song from The Happy Thoughts

Need a little pep in your step?  Well, then you’ve got to get into The Happy Thoughts, the newest power-pop band to burn a hole through my stereo.  The band is releasing their self-titled record on May 31st with Hozac, and it’s going to be one hell of a record, as I’ve already spun it halfa-dozen times since I got it late last night.  There’s good speed to this single, with a steady vocal delivery, and a little bit of grit in between.  You’ll find yourself yearning to blast these tunes as your speeding down the highway on that road trip by yourself.  Seriously, it’s going to be a helluva ride with The Happy Thoughts. New Music from The People’s Temple

While the majority of the work I’ve heard from People’s Temple has been rather brash and energetic, the young Lansing group seems to have fleshed out their sound quite a bit nowadays.  They’ve got a new record coming out on Hozac Records titled Sons of Stone, which hits stores on April 19th.  This time around the band has less angst, instead fueling their sound with squalling layers of guitar and feedback to coincide with a more haunting vocal performance.  Of course, the psychedelic sound might come up with some listeners because of that guitar sound, but no matter, this is just a solid track, sure to be a sign of things to come for the group. Give it a go.

New Tunes from Gentleman Jesse and His Men

When I briefly spoke to Jesse of Gentleman Jesse at his show this year over at Beerland, he said he had a slew of 7″ coming our way.  The first came off Douchemaster, while the most recent, You’ve Got the Wrong Man, just came out on Hozac Records.  Of course, it’s all leading up to a new GJ&HM release that’s supposed to come out in 2011.  His tracks are always short and sweet, full of jangling guitars, rocking that simple power-pop straight at you in under 3 minutes.  It’s what made me love punk, and it’s what definitely gets me excited about everything Jesse, and his men, put together. Try out one of the new tracks, and then hit up Hozac so you can get your hands on it.

New Tunes from Sleepovers

As I prepared to get my rock on for this week at Chaos in Tejas, I was just browsing through labels and looking for new releases by some of my favorites, like Hozac Records.  They’ve got several bands coming our way this week, but more on that at another time.  I want to talk about this catchy little single by Sleepovers from Chicago.  I mean, you throw that old school rock n’ roll sound together with some handclaps and you’re bound to catch my interest. You judge the goodness.
