We covered a fair amount of ground last week, though perhaps not quite as much rolling out as the previous week of tunes. We did get a new Jad Fair/Samuel Locke Ward video premiere that can only be seen HERE. That being said, there were tons of other tunes we can run up our playlist flagpole, like the news tune from Sharp Pins, as part of Kai’s reissue of Radio DDR. Dean Wareham dropped another single from his new record, so that’s good news for all of us. Plus, the end of the week hit hard, with great new ditties from Exploding Flowers and Mythical Motors to round out a solid week of tunes. Stream them below.

Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward Announce Pure Candy

For all the trends and all the subreddits, it’s always gratifying to know that there are artists like Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward who seem to revel in the simplicity of the songwriting milieu. Today we come to you with news that the two will join forces for Pure Candy, their third collaborative LP. Our first sneak peek is a recipe of sorts; it’s a concoction for the perfect person, seemingly, all of it worked over sliding guitar licks and bubbling bass grooves. There’s this little tonal shift that occurs after each verse, hitting right after the words momentarily cease; it’s dug itself right into my ear canals and I’m hoping its made itself a home. Claus Frohlich created the video using some of Jad Fair’s drawings, continuing the uniqueness of the project. Pure Candy will be out on March 7th via Shrimper and Stationary Heart!

Refrigerator Announce Get Lost + Share Fire on 12th Street Video

Some 30 years and 15 albums into their career, and Refrigerator seem to continue to push themselves sonically, fueled by the intersection where improvisation and pop crash into one another. Their opening track on Get Lost is featured below, offering up a throttling wall of noise built up by the dueling guitars fighting with one another for breathing room. Drums roll behind the battle, establishing just enough consistent tempo upon which to drape vocals; they’re presented in a spiritual fashion, creating this spiritual chant that only seems to build anxiously as the guitars continue to nip and bite at one another. Eventually the vocals give up, sitting by as the guitars furiously wail through your speakers, closing the song with one last erratic gasp. If the video seems familiar, it’s because its the artwork of Half Japanese founder Jad Fair, who also drew the artwork for the limited release of Get Lost; it will be available on August 23rd via Shrimper/Grapefruit Records.

We had a rough start last week, with a wee bit of server issues…plus getting back into work after some time off. But, we came back to a bunch of sweet tunes from some ATH favorites…new videos from Blues Lawyer and En Attendant Ana, not to mention one that tied up the excellent LP from Doom Flower. I was blown away by another fresh track from Joyeria, and RayRay did a little write up on our friends in Why Bonnie. I was really in love with that Grey Factor tune we ran at the end of the week, but it hasn’t made it onto streaming platforms, so check that out before digging into new EPs from Dippers and Peel Dream Magazine.

Every time I feel a bit detached from the Austin music scene and the hype, I realize that somewhere out there, Jad Fair (of Half Japanese) is working on something brilliantly charming, just penning song after song because there’s no point after that. This go round, he’s continuing his prolific last few years with a new project with Iowan Samuel Locke Ward. Personally, this is the sort of rock I gravitate towards, and sort of always have. Songwriting is perfect, simple and just the right moments for melody, though the song seems to capture little imperfections, or so it seems, giving off just the slightest sense of being an oddball in a pop world. I’ll always root for stuff like this, which is why I’m looking forward to hearing the whole of the duo’s Happy Hearts LP, out February 10th via Kill Rock Stars.
