Fresh Track From The Besnard Lakes

besnardWhat is there really to say about The Besnard Lakes, other than that they’ve been around for a little over a decade, making progressive pop music that has become a silent staple in the indie rock world? Well, the band is back with this new single, “The Plain Moon,” which has got a definite New Pornos-vibe going on; there’s a great deal of layering and texture to the song. The guitars are a bit bluesy and growl in the bottom of the mix, while the translucent vocals showcase build on each other, all parts equally distorted. The band’s got a new album due out on January 16th via Jagjaguwar, which is called A Colisuem Complex Museum. You can go preorder it here.

Show Preview: Jenny Hval @ Holy Mountain (Tonight)

jennyThere must be a soft spot in the hearts of Holy Mountain, as they’ve got a couple of really beautiful songstresses playing their venue in the next week, Jenny Hval, however, is first up. She’s gotten a lot of praise for Apocalypse, girl, her newest album, with the 7.9 from everyone’s favorite haters over at P4K. Clearly, she’s doing something right, which should encourage you to head over to Holy Mountain tonight to check out her set. She’ll be accompanied by Briana Marela, who is know slouch in her own right, having recently released All Around Us for Jagjaguwar.  It’s a heavy hitting evening of ladies, and it’s only $11 bucks, HERE.

unnamedIt’s been a busy year for Small Black and Team ATH has already shared two new singles from the band so we might as well go on and share a third.  This one is called “Back at Bells” and is yet again another gem sure to get you more fired up for the band’s new album.  What else is left to say really?

Don’t forget to pick up Best Blues on October 16th via Jagjaguwar.

Smooth Synth Pop From Briana Marela

unnamed-2Chances are slim that you’ve already heard of Seattle-based Briana Marela; she got some attention for the release of her first single, “Surrender” from her upcoming album back in May, but other than that she’s remained somewhat under the radar, though I have a feeling that’s going to change soon. “Take Care of Me,” the song below, is a sonically cool track; when you start listening, you’ll notice off the bat that Marela’s vocals are quite unique and the perfect compliment to the instrumentation.  What this song brings to the table is a sleek blend of electronic elements and ethereal vocals to wrap you in a wispy vortex of sound. Briana Marela is set to release her newest album, All Around Us via Jagjaguwar in a few short weeks on August 21st. Go preorder it here.

Slow Trip with Foxygen

foxyginI love to love and hate Foxygen.  Their first LP was remarkable, so remarkable that when they brought their live debacle of a show to Austin that I had to force myself to walk out (not just go to the bar; I straight up walked out). All that nonsense aside, I’m still quite fascinated with their musicianship.  Just listen to this song; it opens with a carnival-esque freak show before folding into this really simple piece of melodic neo-folk.  There’s two different vocalists, which shouldn’t surprise since the group is taking 9 people on the road as their band (please rehearse!).  Even if ‘I heard they suck live,’ they’re music is still captivating…look for more of it on October 14th when …and Star Power is released by Jagjaguwar.

Lia Ices Brings New Single

liaicesThings seem to be going well for Lia Ices, at least if you’re catching the buzz from her newest single.  It was all over the Internet last week, and I was a bit reluctant at first due to the odd bit of distorted guitar that cuts through the chorus.  Admittedly, it’s still not my favorite part of the track, but the rest of the song really has an uplifting spirit to it…perfect for the end of summer parties that are coming our way.  This is the latest single from her album Ices, which will have a release date of September 16th via Jagjaguwar.  You want some fun pop? Here you go.

Brand New Sharon Van Etten Music

sharon_van_etten_1332170904_crop_550x366We’re getting closer to the release date of the new Sharon Van Etten album, Are We There.  It’s one of the most anticipated records, at least over here at the ATH offices.  I mean, can one top Tramp, which was a nearly perfect album?  Based on this track, it looks like she might be ready to take a good go at topping her previous work.  Her guitar work sounds pretty solid here, backed by little bits of piano touches and the strength of her memorable voice. You’ll be able to hear her new collection of songs when Jagjaguwar releases the album on May 27th.

Angel Olsen Releases Another Single

angelolsenThis Angel Olsen track bounced around a few days ago, so it’s fair to say that many people have already absorbed it.  But, it’s just too good for me to ignore, not to mention it provides a little diversity to the heavier side of things we’re running today.  What first caught me was the little buzz on the sound of the guitar; it’s strange how some things will fascinate your ears.  But, Olsen really has a great grasp on her voice nowadays, and it’s perfectly on display here, offering up a sultry tone wrapped in elegance. Jagjaguwar will be releasing her new album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, on February 18th, and it’s looking to be a must have.

Great New Tune From Angel Olsen

511I hope you’ll enjoy this great new tune  called “Forgiven/Forgotten” coming your way from female rocker Angel Olsen.  Now at times, some might try to say that the ladies can’t rock with their male counterparts, but I’d say that this tune begs to differ.  It’s a great, washed out, rock n rollin’ number that’s worthy of repeat listens.

New album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, is due out February 18th on JagJaguWar Records.

New Beauty From Cave Singers

We ATH kids have always been huge fans of Cave Singers and the beautiful and gritty folk music they’ve been creating for the last 4-5 years.  They seem to be one of those bands that might be considered under appreciated by many, as they seem to have a decent following, but not near the fan base you’d expect from such incredible music.  That being said, you can imagine my excitement when my inbox had this new gem “Have to Pretend” waiting for me.  It’s set to appear on the band’s upcoming album Naomi due out March 5th on Jagjaguwar.
