Kelley Stoltz Returns with Reni’s Car + New LP

Sadly, it sometimes we take our greatest artists for granted, and such is the life I fear for Kelley Stoltz. The songwriter has definitely been lauded, and maybe the fault is mine, so every time I hear new stuff, I circle back and jam out to Stoltz for a few days; I mean, honestly, the dude’s never written a bad tune, that I’ve heard. Hopefully we’re all hope on that train as we await La Fleur, a brand new LP from Kelley, dropping this Summer. For my two cents, there’s something in the songwriting that feels like a mixture between Glenn Donaldson and Robert Pollard, though with a bit more of a psychedelic bend on the guitar vibes. Plus, the song got a cool backstory, as he recants a tale of spending the day in the car of Stone Roses drummer Reni. Sounds like another classic jam if you’re asking me…La Fleur is out on June 7th via Dandy Boy Records/Agitated Records.

Three Kelley Stoltz Records!?!?!

kelleyThree new Kelley Stoltz records? That’s a gift to us all. I feel like he labored with his follow-up to To Dreamers, so it’s great to see the songsmith back so soon with three new albums, although one is being attributed to Willie Weird. Regardless, I’ll go on a limb here and say that Stoltz is the poor man’s (or rich man’s, depending on your view) M. Ward. He’s got the same great recording processes that tie into the nostalgic landscape of American music, yet he’s a little bit left of center…so perhaps he’s never gotten his due.  I’m hoping these three releases get him some much deserved accolades. It seems the big release is In Triangle Time via Castle Face in November, whilst 4 Cuts and the Scuzzy Inputs of Willie Weird albums come out on Stroll On, a UK label. Here’s some samples:

Melancholy Storytelling from Tom Brosseau

tommyboyI can’t say that I’ve been too familiar with Tom Brosseau up until this point, but after listening to a great deal of his new work, I think I’m going to join in with the applause.  He’s got a classic style to songwriting; it’s one that puts him next to old work of Kelley Stoltz and M. Ward.  There’s a transparency in his narratives, but there’s also a sound that I recall hearing around my house as a young kid….later in my smoke-filled one-bedroom apartment.  His new effort Perfect Abandon will find it’s way into the traditional American cannon when it’s released on March 3rd via Crossbill Records.

Kelley Stoltz Returns

TMR219FrontCover550Okay, so it’s not like Kelley Stoltz has been completely absent from the world; he’s done production work for Sonny Smith and the Sandwitches.  But, his own solo career has been fairly quiet since To Dreamers was released a few years back.  We’re excited that he’s returned with a new song, and a new label! He’s signed on with Third Man Records to release Double Exposure, which has production duties from Eddy Current/Total Control’s Mikey…so it might have a different touch than the last album, which Kelley produced himself.   The album will be released on September 24th, and the first single is now available for you to enjoy.

Great New Jam from Kelley Stoltz

In 2010 we fell in love with To Dreamers, the last effort released by Kelley Stoltz, so we’ve been patiently been waiting for him to put out some new tracks in town.  Luckily, I stumbled across a brand new 7″ that he put out titled Two Imaginary Girls, which was released by Les Disques Steak.  This new tune is a nice little 3 minute rock n’ roll tune that demonstrates Stoltz’s classic style of songwriting, especially that really simple vocal change that goes down during the chorus.  Hopefully this means more new stuff is just around the corner from Kelley.  You can jam to the B-Side HERE.

New Music From Kelley Stoltz

Veteran San Francisco musician Kelley Stoltz is returning on October 12th with an album of new material on Sub Pop Records.  The album, entitled To Dreamers, features material recorded mostly by Kelley himself with the occasional assistance from his live band.  Below you’ll find the first single called “I Don’t Get That” from his upcoming effort.  It’s got a bit of that 60s style British pop to it that I’ve been into recently.
