Stream This: Cool Sounds + Toledo + Kelly Duplex

It’s Friday…and I just wanted to point you in the direction of some jams that have been on rotation around these parts, just in case you don’t have the time to really browse through the web and find that magic. So here’s a couple of suggestions on my end.

Cool Sounds are an Aussie outfit we’ve supported for some time, and today they release Bystander around the world. For me, I’ve been drawn to “Back to Me” since I first heard it, so I’m sticking with that as my favorite slow burn on the LP, but, there’s this subtle sunlight from “South of France.”

And, earlier this week we tossed out a tune from Toledo, and the band drop their Jockeys of Love EP today. It’s a collection of well written ballads with just a faint hint of that subtle emo sound; it reminds me a lot of Good Morning, offering just good clean guitar tunes to bounce around in your head.

Kelly Duplex‘s debut LP is something I’ve been raving about the last few months, sharing every little single I could. Well, today’s the day you get to hear it in its entirety, courtesy of Strange Daisy. Plus, if you’re a collector of vinyl, you’ve got to see all the limited edition colors they’re offering…on top of these rad songs!

Kelly Duplex Cover the Sundays

If you haven’t been paying attention, I’ve really been enjoying New Orleans trio Kelly Duplex as they approach the release of their debut self-titled full length. Included in that release, and now with a live performance video to accompany, is the band covering the Sunday’s classic “Here’s Where the Story Ends.” They take the core of the song, holding tightly to the song’s vocal softness, but amplifying the lightly jangling guitar notes in order to build a heavier dreamscape; I love the emphatic burst midtune too, giving some toughness to the song. Their debut drops on February 12th via Strange Daisy.

I’ve really been enjoying the stuff I’ve heard from New Oreleans’ Kelly Duplex; they’re running out singles to prepare you for the release of their self-titled album. I love the heavy immediacy of this tune, racing into this wall of ledded guitars vibrating all the stuff on your walls before the vocals slink in to provide a careful balance. But, as much as that works for me, I was totally sold when they break it down right at the 1 minute mark for some crunchy guitar work and a slower build; it gives the song this infectiousness I adore (reminds me of our own Growl) before blasting forth again. The new LP is out on February 12th.

I woke up this morning wanting something that was heavy, but still clung tightly to the simple pop structures that make me tick, so I was lucky to have this Kelly Duplex tune waiting for me. Honestly, the New Orleans trio reminds me a lot of our friends Growl (RIP), intertwining emo tendencies and power pop riffs to sublime effect. You can see yourself in this song, bouncing on your bed and playing those heavy air guitar riffs, only to collapse as the song fades out and a huge grin creeps across your face. Sometimes a simple rock song is all you need to turn the day around. Look for the band to release their self-titled LP via Strange Daisy on February 12th.
