For some reason I felt like we were nursing a SXSW hangover, just a week later than normal. But, in all that, still found tons of great tunes to write about and share. Good to see personal faves like Lachlan Denton and Greg Mendez popping up (with that Greg tune getting tons of love), plus some videos from the likes of Low Praise and 7ebra gave us a chance to revisit some singles we’d been keeping an eye on. Also, some local love for Troller and Houston’s Alien Eyelid, so trying to keep it Texas ya’ll. Stream on!

Lachlan Denton Shares Final Single from Furnishings

In the second week of April, you’ll be able to get your hands on a copy of Furnishings, the latest LP from Australia’s Lachlan Denton (Pop Filter/Ocean Party). But, there’s one last tease before you get out your credit card! The song is is one of the man special moments on the album, taking Lachlan’s voice and presenting it on the backbone of a pulsating synth line; it somehow manages to add even more drama to the performance, pulling at you dive deeper. As the song unfolds, there are light little flourishes that burst forth and add depth, all of which comes to head right at the 2:40 mark, with full backing vocals, horns and more. You can grab Furnishings on April 14th via Bobo Integral/Spunk/Osborne Again.

We covered a whole lot of ground last week, as there’s always tons of music spilling out into the world. I was really high upon the new track from Daisies, which is why its leading our playlist. There were also tons of ATH regulars like the Reds Pinks and Purples, Lachlan Denton, Jana Horn, Dippers and the High Water Marks. Plus, with SXSW on the horizon, we did tons of little meet and greet posts with the bands: Blondeshell, Meernaa, Foamboy and more. So find a song you love, and go check out what we hit up last week!

It seems like today is as good a day as any to spend our time in the Oceanic region of Australia, especially when there’s new music to be heard from Lachlan Denton. Long has he been adored songwriter on this site, but with his forthcoming album, Furnishings, on the horizon, there seems to be this acceptance and maturity in his craft. For instance, atop the buoyant vibe of the music, Denton weaves a promise of finding comfort in the ones you love and riding out whatever storms may approach; it’s not going to be filled with sunshine and rainbows, but you whatever end we all meet should be done with friends. It’s good to see friends Snowy and Curtis also make an appearance in the video, a seeming documentary on a day in the life of Lach. And as he’s done with his tunes of late, there’s a nice punch burst just after the two minute mark. Furnishings drops on April 14th via Bobo Integral/Spunk/Osborne Again.

You’d think in a short coverage week, we’d have few tunes, but there was so much great stuff last week, that we couldn’t help but to try and cover as much as we loved. Personally, I fawned over new Lachlan Denton, Cor de Luxand Tiny Ruins, plus continued my support for Spice World as Album of the Year. I also hit up the Austin scene with new stuff from Bayonne, Dorio, Fantastic Purple Spotsand Rad Gnar. RayRay loved that new Pile tune to death and premiered a new Strawberry Fuzz jam you can find lurking in here too. If we missed something super cool, let us know, otherwise, here’s a way to pass an hour of your day, happily.

Lachlan Denton Annoucnes Furnishings

Bobo Integral turns 10 years old in 2023, so first, congrats to the label on a great run! But, with that anniversary, the label announces a new record from one of my favorite artists, Lachlan Denton (Ocean Party/Pop Filter/Partner Look). There’s a snappiness to this track, which is really charming, playing perfectly into Lach’s vocal delivery; I love how he stretches the syllables in “prove” and “lose” as the song’s two minute mark quickly approaches. In the subject matter, Denton is reminding us that there’s a whole world out there to lift us up, if we’re only willing to put down the phone and reach out to friends for those real connections. Another gem; I look forward to Furnishings when it drops on April 14th.

Partner Look Announce Debut LP

We first brought you news of Partner Look last April, when the band dropped a quick 7″ after forming as kind of a spur of the moment projects between the Hasnain sisters and their partners, Lachlan Denton and Dainis Lacey. This is one of the unique things about the Melbourne scene right now, with friends trading places all over to create exciting new projects. Today, the band announce their debut self-titled LP, dropping via Trouble in Mind/Osborne Again/Spunk in February. Lachlan (of Pop Filter/LD + ER/Ocean Party) gets the lead on the vocals here, and his voice always has this familiarity and spirited vibrance; it adds to the bouncing rhythm section helmed by his drum work. There’s a little bit of twang in the guitars, sort of taking a kind of psychedelic folk boogie to the track that reaches its climax in the chorus when everyone joins in for a singalong. Try this one on for size.

Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton Share Authenticity

I was all prepared for a really forlorn vibe to course through the whole of this last single from Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton; honestly, you get this intimate listen to Lachlan here, just working his voices over a really light strum. At :51 seconds, he’s joined by Emma, carefully, then letting a percussive element join them, giving the song just the faintest little bob and bounce. There’s this carefully ornate guitar line soloing after the 2 minute mark that’s absolutely charming, setting Denton up for this incredibly powerful wail that just crashes into you with such brutal force that I’m pretty sure a tear came to my eye. Something is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say is out this Friday!

Last week I might have gotten a little carried away; my wife and newborn son were spending a lot of time resting, so I was just hanging out writing about songs all week…something a teacher, soccer coach, dad and label owner typically can’t do. So, this week’s playlist of last week’s hits might be a little longer than usual, but you’re going to be all the better for it. Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton Share Done My Time

On the first single from Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton, Lach took the spotlight, but here with “Done My Time” the control is given to Emma. I really fell in love with the percussion here, soft and gentle, like something you’d hear on an early Belle and Seabass album, or a Kings of Convenience track, like a fox running through the snow. Emma maneuvers her voice atop a softened strum and a punctuating piano line, adding just the faintest bounce. Fall’s creeping in on our end of things, and its starting to open my tastes up a bit more to some great contemplative pop, so this is perfectly fitting. Something is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say? is out on October 8th via Bobo Integral.
