Gracious Losers Announce Six Road Ends

While the opening moments of the new single from Gracious Losers begins with a foreboding guitar sliding and bending, don’t look to pigeonhole the track as some sort of everyday folk tune. Instead, Jonathan Lilley and his 9-piece super group develop the tune into a bit of a moody pop burner. It starts with the joining up of vocal duties with Amanda McKeown, drafting a new melody to glue the tune together. Moving forward, keys tinker in the background and those bending strings seem to swell and swing, almost exalting the vocal display. It’s a unique trick, allowing the song to sound both forlorn and uplifting; this is the kind of magic you can expect on Six Road Ends, the new LP dropping on March 25th via Last Night from Glasgow.

Hadda Be Announce Another Life

If you’re looking for a little bit of dreamy pop combined with sprinkles of 90s rock, then boy have I got the band for you today: Hadda Be! They’re the newest act on powerhouse label Last Night from Glasgow, and I can’t get over this jam. It’s got just a hint of swagger that nods at punk, but these arena rock feels that make it sound huge; you feel like you’re surrounded by hoards of fans clamoring to hear those huge riffs billow through the speaker stacks. Some rock just feels timeless, feels like it could bridge any genre, any emotion; this tune is one such track, and thus should be the highlight of your listening experience today. Look for Another Life to drop on April 30th.

Mark W. Georgsson Shares One of a Kind

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Last Night from Glasgow, and they’ve got a new release on the horizon that I’m just now checking into, Mark W. Georgsson. His sound is a bit along the lines of folk/Americana, but what really attracted me to this single is the way the arrangements are layered to really create a swell of pop sensibility amidst the more traditional. Strings and bouncing piano give the faintest hop to Georgsson’s voice, and some clever “do do dos” are thrown in around the 3 minute mark to put a final stamp on the track’s ability to connect with the listener. This song appears on the Comes a Time EP, dropping on August 14th!

New Music from Andre Salvador & the Von Kings

Andre Salvador & the Von Kings are a new act on my radar, owed entirely to their new work with up-and-coming label Last Night from Glasgow. Today they announce their new LP, and do so with this power-pop rocker that should have you tapping your toes as you memorize the chorus. I think songwriter Tim Cheplick even coyly drops the band’s sound into his lyrics; I mean, he flat out says “here’s another heavy soft sound.” There’s a crunchiness to the guitars throughout, though you can’t turn away from the hooks and the melodic playfulness popping in and out of the vocals. Pop rock should always sound this good. You can find the track on their self-titled album, out on August 31st!

Another Pop Tune from the Close Lobsters

I suppose the timelessness of pop music is what keeps us all coming back time and time again. For me, it was the soft vocals and jangling guitar notes that remind of the first few tapes I bought as a kid, which is why this new number from the Close Lobsters is so great. There’s this slight British affectation to the vocals, and of course, that gives the song a distinct sound. All that said, it’s really just about that ringing guitar churning and turning in the stereo; it gets an added emphasis as the drums grow more forceful…rounding out as the perfect execution of pop music. Post Neo Anti will be released on February 28th via Last Night from Glasgow/ Shelflife Records.

Brand New Close Lobsters

Every time I go to cull some classic guitar pop from my record collection for DJing purposes, I always make sure I’ve got Foxheads Stalk This Land is in the bin. So to me, its great that some 30 years on, Close Lobsters are still making great pop music. The rhythm section does a fine job opening this track up to your ears, giving a nice bobbing pulse before the guitars come in and work their own charms. In the vocals, you can still find that sense of promise in the warmth of the melodies; it feels like there’s promise for us all just around the corner. Towards the end, you get some pseudo-spoken word moments working beneath the guitars before a sort of pop mantra rides the song to a close. The band will release their new album, Post Neo Anti via Shelflife/Last Night from Glasgow on February 28th.
