Roller Derby Share Video for Lights Out

One of my favorite pop acts of the last few years is German outfit, Roller Derby, who’ve recently released their album When the Night Comes Out. As a whole, the record features some line-up changes, though Philine’s voice is definitely still the driving force behind the group’s magic. This single below, for instance, has a bit of a darker brood, matching up for Philine’s natural delivery, as it’s always had a heavier resonance. I also appreciate the reserved feel, where they allow themselves to sink into the emotion rather than pulling out the same old pop tricks. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tricks, but I love to hear folks mixing it up. When the Night Comes Out is available to stream now!

Wails Drop Lights Out Single

While the Austin scene started off the year on a roll, we look East towards our H-Town neighbors to talk about Wails, as they drop a brand new single that’s been on rotation throughout the weekend. There’s this circular ring to the track, offering up an atmosphere that reverberates from start to finish; it sets the song up perfectly with a warmth that supports the vocals. That voice tiptoes in the midst of the misty center, seemingly rising up to meet some punctuated percussive elements, all of it swelling and textured with a beautiful wall of drama. You’ll find the track on the group’s next EP, which will be out this Spring!

Fashionably Late To The Party: Cherry Crush

12072734_486961824797458_1193891941873060704_nI don’t know what the weather’s like in your neck of the woods, but here in the ATX we are burning our winter coats and donning our spring dresses and shorts for today’s perfect spring day. For me, this warming up in temperature always gets me hankering to listen to a hefty amount of shoegaze/ dreampop music, and lucky for me I found a great track from Cherry Crush. “Lights Out” is a burst of energy, the kind of song you blast through your headphones while you’re outside enjoying the warm sunshine. The percussion on this song is airy and lush, cymbal laden and light, while the guitars shimmer through and backup vocals join the lead for some “ohs” in the background. Turn it up loud and enjoy the weather…or at least pretend like it’s spring.

Bishop Allen Gives Us Another Pop Hit

bishoWe’re less than a month away from the new Bishop Allen LP,  and it looks to offer us a whole lot of enjoyment as we wrap up our summer.  We previously shared “Start Again,” which was an immediate pop hit.  This new song, keeps vibe going, utilizing really light guitar lines and washes of keyboards to craft a pulsating verse that’s met by a quiet whirlpool of sugary delight.  Their new record, Lights Out, hits on August 19th via Dead Oceans, wrapping up what’s been a pretty fun summer of listening activities.  I can’t wait for you folks to hear this album, so get another little taste below.

New Album from Bishop Allen

bishopallen_largeSome songs are impossible to ignore.  They immediately grab you, holding you tight, spinning you in whirlwind of pop.  That’s precisely the feeling I got when I listened to this brand new track from Bishop Allen.  If you look at the cover art for the band’s upcoming record, Light’s Out, you get the sense that the band was pursuing the same thing, putting some young kisd on the cover dancing up a storm.  It’s the sign of something delightfully catchy coming your way at the end of the summer, August 19th to be exact; it’s being released by Dead Oceans.  I dare you not to like this song.
