Semihelix Share Will It Take

Not sure if you’ve got Semihelix on your radar, but this is one of the recent Austin bands I’m super stoked to jam. I love the way the song rushes in immediately, letting those jangling notes meet up with some fuzzy distortion creeping in from the distance. Geannie Friedman delivers two great performances; she toys with the song’s dreamy nature during the verses, but goes full pop when her voice soars in the chorus. Be sure to stick around too, as the fade into the ending is a real nice touch. It’s pop rock with a real edge, and just enough of that DIY spirit to be sure the band’s Recoil will be on your radar when they drop the full LP on October 1st via Mariel Recording Company.

I’m hoping that Austin puts Semihelix on the map this year, as the band’s work is one of the more enjoyable sounds I’ve heard coming from the city this year. I love the way the jangling guitars erupt into a sort of hazy shuffle, kind of like watching clouds move in fast motion as they roll over some desert horizon. You’ll also be into some of the shoegaze-ish elements, the distorted guitars that build walls in the background, and then its all thrown in with Geannie Friedman’s solid vocal work, and we’ve got this billowing dream pop heavy hitter you’re going to want in rotation. They’ll be dropping their debut later this summer via Mariel Recording Company.

We’re nearing the end of the week, and I’ve already got my eyes on the horizon, so looking for some sweet jams to move us into the weekend, like this great tune from Austin’s Semihelix. Knowing my tastes, it only takes you a minute to catch onto the charms of the band, playing with those pseudo-jangling guitars while cymbals shimmer in the far off distance of the mix. It all leaves room for the calming waves of Geannie Friedman’s voice, who I’ll admit pulls close to a young Jenny Lewis…a close ear should catch what I’m hearing. Regardless, the band will be releasing their debut LP later this year via Mariel Recording Company, so we’ll have more news for you soon!

ThunderStars Share New Single

This debut effort from Austin outfit ThunderStars has me spaced out in the best sense; I find that the song employs great usage of time, drawing out the edges of the tune in the best way, so as to let the song slowly craft its own path. The vocal seem to lurk just beneath the surface of the mix, almost daring you to dive beneath and see what will unfold. It feels extremely dense, and yet sparse at the same time; I guess it’s heavy without ever actually being heavy. The group are set to release Number Stations this Friday via Mariel Recording Company.
