Devendra Banhart Shares Memorial

I honestly don’t know what it is about Devendra Banhart, but something about his songwriting always just feels like I’m at home. Maybe it’s the slight quiver just beneath his voice, or maybe its the sincerity that shines through his lyrics. On his newest single, it seems like Devendra is definitely getting personal, having penned a song in memory of three lost friends. It’s such a gentle number, with these beautiful arrangements behind Devendra’s voice and guitar; they add this textural depth that is often overlooked in his writing. His new album Ma is being released by Nonesuch on September 13th. It’ll be followed by a bunch of tour dates for the Fall, including a stop in Austin for Levitation.

Song Premiere: Another Green World

agwWe’ve posted and shared our fascination with Alec West’s new solo project Another Green World a few times in the past.  The style is sonically right up our alley with its dream like sounds and beautifully composed pop tendencies.  Today we’re happy to be premiering a new song from the project called “Snow”.  Once again we are finding many things to like here and I’m sure you guys will too.

New album, Memorial, is out October 21st on 80s Ladies Records.

Dream Pop from Another Green World

agwMy mind is all over the place, so it makes sense that my musical tastes today are all over the place.  Right now, I’m feeling the synth dreamscape crafted by Another Green World.  It’d be easy just to throw the music in with an ode to Brian Eno, but there’s more of a wash of distortion that’s reminiscent of the work of every 80s band and those that followed in their shoegazing footsteps.  I like the string emphasis that leaks through my speakers; it’s a nice little touch. Look for his new album, Memorial, to come out on October 12th…you can also visit his site and revisit his older sonic constructions.

R.I.P. Levon Helm

I don’t have much to say here.  My busy life as a teacher made me miss this information all day yesterday and I am finding out just now.  It’s a truly sad day in the music world as we say goodbye to one of the greats Levon Helm.  The Washington Post actually has a pretty awesome recap on Helm’s life for those looking to know more about the legend.  Levon, I know that you didn’t necessarily support the way The Last Waltz turned out, but you sound damn good on this song my friend.  You were one of the reasons why I thought singing while I played the drums was cool despite what my friends said.  You will truly be missed.
