Canalss Share Manateez

When I was younger, most of my friends were super into grunge, but that’s where my dads taste got me into Townes and Nick Drake, then my record store of choice turned me onto Elliott Smith; I just naturally gravitated towards singer-songwriters that embraced this sort of solitude. All this to say, Canalss reminds me a lot of that, albeit with a slightly more modern take, akin to early Coma Cinema stuff or Peter and the Wolf. It feels like it was made at home for home listening; you get the intimacy, but there’s this faint hint at absurdity in the lyrics, which personally makes it all the more endearing. This tune is brought to you by the kind folks at Zerowell Records.

Millionyoung Drop Lost Single

So the single itself has not been lost, rather the title of the newest banger from Millionyoung is named “Lost.” It feels like the track really fits there, as I’ve found myself letting go in the middle of this tune; there’s this steady electronic pulse that kept my head bobbing through the dreamy soundscape created by Mike Diaz. There was this bonus little guitar that enters at 1:52 that just gets you swirling and dancing about the room, adding this textural elegance that elevates it above just mere dreamy background vibes. This tune’s perfect for sliding into the pool or sitting in your yard as the warm breeze blows across. Their new album Ocean View will be out this Fall.

Stream the New Single from DA Stern

daWhen I first pressed play on this track, I immediately thought of Joey Ramone’s voice, which took me to a happy place. Something in the opening with the guitar reminds me of “I Want You Around,” but then it turns into a more calming take on Teenage Fanclub. Take those two things into play, and you’ve got a really great pop tune that rings in your speakers loud enough to make you feel alive. DA Stern will release his new album, Aloha Hola, on January 20th of next year via Twosyllable Records, so be on the lookout for huge riffs and good melodies.

Miami Vampin

Dipset member Jim Jones continues his Vampire Life series with his new mixtape Miami Vampin. Jim Jones delivers his usual blend of gritty and humorous lyrics over hard hitting beats, now moving his night life–Vampire Life–to a Miami backdrop. The Vampire Life series has also turned into a clothing line and a soda (not available in Austin, but can be ordered online). Something new to Jim Jones’ music with this mixtape is the use of Auto-Tune. I am not a big fan of Auto-Tune but fortunately the mixtape is not bogged down by it. The mixtape can be downloaded or streamed for free from DatPiff. The opening track can be streamed below.

Keep It Pop with The Hongs

hongsAs the title mentions, I’ve been in a pretty pop-centric mood today, trying to stay up on my toes.  So, in that vein, it’s only appropriate that I bring you a new track from The Hongs.  Sure, there’s a bit of a darker underbelly hiding in the song, but if you just stick with the vocals, you can tell that the Florida group definitely have aims to brighten your day.  Other such tracks from the band are currently being offered up on the group’s upcoming Pet Scans EP.  If you’re down to enjoy yourself today, give this track a spin.
