Last Week’s Jams (7.24 – 7.28)

We may have gone a bit overboard last week, as I see that we covered over 25 different tunes last week. But, that being said, we also ran some gosh-darned freaking hits. I loved that new jam from Split System, and have played it well over 50 times at this point. That, and that new track from Prewn pretty much made my week. I mean, there’s new stuff from Woods, Night Drive and all sorts bonus EP coverage for Death Bells and Bedroom Eyes. Plenty of stuff to dig into, so why not get on it, eh?

Monnone Alone Share New Single

Monnone Alone have a new LP in the works, and as we await final details, Mark Monnone has been teasing us with great singles to whet our appetite, like today’s “Loose Terrain.” The song takes the band’s soft pop approach and blends it with these little psychedelic flourishes on the border, giving off this sort of spiritual burst that adds a bit of boogie to your day. I love how there’s this natural swing that hits in the chorus, as Mark always maximizes a bit of playfulness in his craft, letting you get swept up in the musical charms being churned out. Well, it seems like we finally worked out the kinks in our lives and were able to get a solid week’s worth of jams out your way. Was excited to get that new High Water Marks tune out there, as well as new Monnone Alone, if you like your pop mixed with a bit of punch. New Austin act Daiistar has their first single, plus our old ATX friends Letting Up Despite Great Faults dropped a new single too from their forthcoming EP! There’s tons of other hits from the likes of Deuce and the Golden Dregs too. Unfortunately, new stuff from Mythical Motors and Weird Numbers isn’t quite on the DSPs, so if you like what we’re covering, check those hits too on the site.

Monnone Alone Are Back with Ways to Wear My Hair

You know Monday will be alright if you wake up to that fresh Monnone Alone single in your inbox. After Stay Foggy, the band have regrouped to begin work on a new record, and the first single from that release has made its way overseas to my desk. Mark Monnone’s voice is always a sure-fire winner, so this track really owes its success to the stunning guitar work. I love that it employs a shuffling jangling guitar line to keep the beat of the song, while the lead guitar sort of takes itself for a walk. Plus, you get a nice little breakdown just before the 2 minute mark to keep the track moving beyond your ordinary fare. Let’s hope the new LP is just as good as this tune!

The end is near my friends, at least for 2022. We’ll likely be popping in and out over the holidays, but songs (and motivation) will be minimal, so don’t expect too much from us on our end. That said, we do have one last Last Week’s Jams to run for you, with a solid amount of hits. I left out all the Best Of lists…but do check out RayRay’s Best Songs and my Top 50 Albums, if you’re so inclined. I made sure to cover the new Galore EP and Fine. Monnone Alone Share The Silos Video

Late in 2021, Monnone Alone dropped Stay Foggy. You’d think we’d just move on, but we’re hanging early in the morning with Aussie sounds, so I of course have to throw my weight behind this new video from the album. The tune is fairly simple, and one of the shorter on the LP, with just a light strum and Mark’s voice hanging in the air. In the video version, you get the shadowy Monnone figure walking through a changing backdrop created by director (and also musician) Lehmann B. Smith. It’s a quick reminder that the album cycle never dies, so revisit Stay Foggy by jumping over HERE.

A little over a year ago, Mark Monnone and his Monnone Alone project released the sparkling Stay Foggy LP. But, seeing as it’s never a bad time to share a nice tune, Mark and company have crafted a video for the record’s title track, and so here I am. The video captures the sort of astral spirit of Mark, as he walks about in the song’s opening minutes, all before he opts to ride on a cloud down a darkened street as he fuzzes up his guitar playing. It’s a great tune, with shimmering crystalline notes and Mark’s soft vocal tones, so perhaps you missed it the first time around, so go HERE to correct that!

Monnone Alone Shares Pepper Jar Single

We’re just a month or so away from the new Monnone Alone LP, so you’ve got to dip your toes into the warm water in Mark’s pool of pop. This new single quickly slides into this huge ringing chords, meant for arena rock status, but brought back to Earth by the softened jangling style of Monnone’s guitar play. While I love that big sound, bordering on crunchy power pop, I think I’m in love with the vocals on this tune; they kind of hang out there on a laundry wire of pop, blowing in the wind, occasionally gusting with these delighting notes that rise and fall so effortlessly. And if that wasn’t enough, how about the song’s fade out, just budding with infectious pop bravado. Stay Foggy will be released on September 3rd via all the usual pop purveyors: Lost and Lonesome/Meritorio/Emo Response/Royal Mint.

Monnone Alone Drop Time Is On the Run Video

Opening with Hamish Kilgour (the Clean) in your new video is bound to get some eyes turning your way, and well, if not, then at least the new Monnone Alone song is a ray of light in these rainy Austin days. I love the uplifting jangle of the guitar tones, almost hinting at sort of surf-worthy vibes, though the bright spot is the way Mark always plays with monosyllabic lines; the do-do-dos add an extra melodic texture that matches the electronic pulse of the tune. Plus, there’s a lot of open space in this tune for the guitars to kind of run and play, frolic about in the mix if you will. This is the second single on Stay Foggy, the new LP out in September via Lost and Lonesome/RoyalMint/EmoResponse/Meritorio.

Monnone Alone Shares Feel It Disappearing Video

This is our site and we do what we want! Sure, I introduced you to the great new “Feel It Disappearing” single from Monnone Alone a few weeks ago, but I wanted to remind you of its pull by sharing this brand new video version of the tune! It’s also in my Top 10 songs of 2021 right now; I think I have it at the No. 4 spot. You get some great images of Mark traversing the wild, socially distanced of course, not to mention some additional flare added in by director Simon Fazio. Still claiming that hook at the 2:17 mark might be one of my favorite 10 second pop nuggets of the year, period. Don’t you agree? Whatever. This song rips. This song appears on the forthcoming Stay Foggy LP (and on a 7″ too) available via Lost and Lonesome and Emotional Response.
