Another New Track from Mount Eerie

It’s still really hard to listen to A Crow Looked at Me; it just seems like something so personal that I had a hard time listening, as much as I loved the songs. But, Mount Eerie returns with another album seemingly dedicated to his late wife Genevieve. This album, and the new single, still holds that quiet intimacy, retelling stories and memories that clearly defined the relationship of the two. There’s this enormous amount of honesty and openness in this process, and as we digest more songs from Phil, perhaps we too can strive for that in our own lives. Now Only will be released on March 16th, and we’ll all scamper off to our own quiet corners to sit alone with Elverum and his new songs.

More New Music from Hungry Cloud Darkening

hcdNot really sure what I’m more drawn to on the latest single from Hungry Cloud Darkening; it’s either the emotional draw of the songs instrumentation or the wispy quality of the vocals.  I’ll admit, I love vocals when they’re recorded this way, but there’s something about the tension that’s being built by the simply strung guitars before the drums creep in with their deep tones.  Then there’s horns, so I get drawn further into the track’s emotional tractor-beam…but I’m still digging the vocals as they move forward with the female counterpart.  Expect to find yourself amazed when Glossy Recall is put forth by Off Tempo Records.

Slow Trip with Hungry Cloud Darkening

hungryHungry Cloud Darkening has probably gotten the most notice as the backing band for Mount Eerie, but the more that I gig myself over to their latest single, the more I feel that there’s something far more important in their own solo work. There’s not a lot of movement within this track, but it’s clear that the sonic exploration holds the key to finding meaning in this tune.  Vocals come at you from a far off world, moving in and out of the soft percussive elements and the other lite tinkering.  I hope this is the sort of music we get when the group releases their record, Glossy Recall, on October 7th via Off Tempo.

New Mellow Jam from Mount Eerie

It looks as though we’re going to wrap up our great week here with the mellower side of things, and I’m perfectly okay with that.  We’re nearing the release of the second Mount Eerie album, from Phil Elverum this year; Ocean Roar is supposed to be contrasted with Clear Moon, which came out early in 2012. When listening here, I feel as if this track is dominated by the percussive element, even though it’s lightly placed in the background.  Phil quietly sings atop it all while a hint of atmospherics moving in and out.  Really, there’s no one making music like Phil.

Why? & Mt. Eerie Tonight @ Mohawk

Tonight you will get a chance to hear Why?, and perhaps determine why there is a lot of hype about this band at the moment.  Personally, I’m thinking that the opening act, Mt. Eerie, should be enough of a reason to head that way this evening.  I mean how can you not like the experimental folk of Phil Elvrum?  Tell me Why?

The show starts at 8 PM at the Mohawk.  You can still get tickets at the door for this one.  Enjoy your night.
