Aluminum Share Windowpanes Video

A few weeks ago we were catching up with our friends over at Dandy Boy Records; they had just recently announced a killer 12″ EP from Aluminum…and now we’ve got a video for that accompany single, just as a reminder of what should be on your radar. The more I listen to this tune, the more I’m drawn to the propulsive nature of verses; it’s matched up right up with the way the video was shot, meant “to capture the wide-eyed feelings of youth.” It’s the perfect set up for the acidic wash of noise that bursts in through the almost-chorus, blurring the lines between our expectations and how far the group are willing to take their sound. The Windowpane EP is out on October 7th, so don’t forget to grab it right now!

The Illness Share Descending G Video

The Illness is a fairly new band to me, though I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that I was initially drawn to this tune because of the inclusion of Steve West (Pavement’s drummer). There sound seems familiar, though I can’t pinpoint precisely why I love it it so much. At times, there are some VU feels working in there, though you can also hear a touch of David Berman in the vocals. Still, it’s the little flourishes in the studio that really brought this track to life for me. It could be the ittle brass notes in the middle background, or maybe the way the guitar strum works into a more focused electric buzz; I think I even heard a faint bird chirp, which could just be a lost note popping its head out. It’s that sort of everything-and-the-kitchen-sink feel, yet still executed well enough to sound perfectly organic. Loving it, and if you do too, you’ll find it on the band’s new 12″ out July 10th via Sea Records.

We Missed Bad Sports

badsports1A few weeks ago, Bad Sports dropped this single, promoting their newest effort for Dirtnap Records. We’ve long supported the Austin/Denton group, and this track is the perfect example of their strengths. They make simple statements with their lyrics, added a pounding rhythm then Orville and Daniel’s vocals give the impression that this is rock n’ roll meant for a huge stadium. Anthemic rock n’ roll only succeeds if you mean it, and if you’ve caught they various acts these guys are involved in (Radioactivity, OBN IIIs, Video), then you know no one means it more.

Solid Rocker from Young Guv + the Scuzz

As if Ben Cook wasn’t busy enough with Fucked Up and Marvelous Darlings, he’s gotta keep his own project, Young Guv going right?  Well, he’s joined up with some of his favorite musicians in Toronto, deemed the Scuzz, and recorded A Love Too Strong 12″, which will hit stores on July 31st.  It’s always interesting to listen to Cook’s work, as it definitely has a softer side than one would expect from the guitarist in Fucked Up.  This song reminds me of The Replacements a little bit, although there’s a softer edge to it overall–even with the Scuzz backing.  I’m pretty stoekd to hear the final product because this song is just killing it on my stereo right now.

Beautiful New Track from FAMY

We’ll be heading off to Fun Fun Fun Fest today, but I wanted to leave you with this superb new track that I stumbled upon this morning.  There’s not too much info out on FAMY, but this track seems like the perfect way to spend the remaining hours of Friday.  There’s a drifting quality of this track, giving you the emotional feeling of moving outside of yourself, only to return with a sense of overwhelming calm.  I figured for those of you not fortunate enough to attend F X 3 Fest, this is a great way to wrap up your afternoon.  Enjoy folks, and be safe out there.
